MARSHALL, Texas – In the first game of a weekend series, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team could not overcome an early deficit as they fell to Louisiana College 14-2. LC improves to 14-5 overall and 5-2 in American Southwest Conference play. ETBU falls to 10-9 and 4-3 in conference action.
LC jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to six straight hits, including a grand slam in the top of the first inning. After three quiet innings for both teams, LC added three runs in the top of the fifth inning. ETBU was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning on a Zach Compton double off the left field wall. LC would add five runs in the last three innings, giving the Wildcats a 14-1 advantage. Matthew Hebert singled home Kam Summrall to close out the scoring.
Compton led the way for ETBU with two hits out of the eight for the Tigers. Hebert, Sumrall, and Jeremy Bateman were each 1-1 in the game, with Sumrall picking up a double. Zach Pollard started the game on the mound for ETBU, and allowed nine runs on 13 hits to give him his first loss of the season.
LC was led by Seth Steven with five hits in six trips to the plate. Steven Pizano had the grand slam in the top of the first inning. Each batter in the LC lineup picked up at least one hit, as the Wildcats had 20 hits as a team. Charlie Waddingham pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits, and striking out nine batters.
ETBU and LC will continue the series tomorrow afternoon with a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m. The second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
