MARSHALL, Texas – After last night’s loss to open the series, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team roared back to sweep the doubleheader against Louisiana College, 9-8 and 13-0 (7), taking their second ASC sries this year. ETBU improves to 12-9 overall and 6-3 in American Southwest Conference action. LC drops to 14-7 overall and 5-4 in ASC play. ETBU won in walk-off fashion in game one, 9-8, in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Josh Warbington single and then shutout LC, 13-0, in game two to shorten the nine inning game to seven innings.

GAME 1 l ETBU 9, LC 8

In game one of the double header, ETBU jumped out to an early lead after a big first inning. ETBU scored four runs to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Zach Gartner and Josh Warbington used RBI singles, and Kam Sumrall scored two runs on an error by LC. LC got one run back in the top of the third, but ETBU got one run back plus two more to push the Tiger lead to 7-1. Gartner doubled home two runs, and Sumrall sent a moon shot over the scoreboard for his first homerun of the season.

LC used a three run homerun, a bases loaded walk, and a RBI fielder’s choice to bring the score within one 7-6. Jaxon Rader stretched the lead to 8-6 on an RBI single to left field. The back-and-forth game would continue as LC added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game. Warbington played hero for ETBU as he delivered a bases loaded walk-off single to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Warbington, Gartner, and Landen Barns each had two hits in the win. Gartner lead the way with three RBI and Warbington had two RBI. ETBU had 11 hits as a team and got on base 14 times. Garrett Penny picked up the win to improve his record to 2-0. Penny pitch 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit or runner on base.

LC was led by Walt Aldridge with two hits and four RBI. Sully Martin had one hit and two runs batted in with a double. Evan Mativi was tagged with the loss to drop to 1-1 this season. Mativi pitched 0.1 innings and allowed one unearned run that proved to be the difference maker.

Game 2 l ETBU 13, LC 0

ETBU controlled game two from the first pitch as they cruised to a 13-0 shutout victory in seven innings to win the series over LC. Zach Compton struck first with an RBI single to score Barns from second base. Gartner recorded his fourth RBI on the day when he produced a sacrifice fly to score Conner Combs. Dylan Sumpter and Conner Combs would hit two-run homeruns each in the bottom of the second inning to give ETBU a 6-0 lead after two innings. Bats for both teams stayed quiet for the next two innings, until ETBU scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. ETBU then erupted for five runs in the sixth inning. Warbington collected two more RBI on a single up the middle, followed by Gartner scoring on a passed ball, and Casey combs hit a two-run RBI single to centerfield to close out the scoring.

The Tigers were led by Zackery Pierce on the mound. Making his first collegiate start, Pierce was spectacular throwing 7.0 innings and allowing only five hits. Offensively, Conner Combs led the way with three hits and two RBI in the contest. Rader, Compton, and Sumpter each had two hits each. Warbinton, Casey Combs, and Sumpter also recorded two RBI each.

Garrett Parker had two hits to lead LC offensively. There was only one free pass issued by Pierce from ETBU, but the LC bats were silenced for a majority of the game. Austin Thompson received the loss to move to 1-1 on the season, allowing six runs on six hits and pitch 1.2 innings.

ETBU will return to action next Friday and Saturday against Sul Ross State University in a three-game series. Game one will be Friday at 7:00 p.m., followed by a double header against the Lobos on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
