MARSHALL, Texas – Counting down the Top 10 moments from 2016-17, this week brings us to our number seven moment. This moment takes place on the gridiron for an offensive performance for the ages.
In their first home game of the season against the Southwest Assemblies of God, the East Texas Baptist University football team broke three team records including 85 points, total offense (912 yards), and team passing (515 yards). ETBU had nine different players score including three rushing touchdowns by Jourdan McNeil, two receiving touchdowns by Richard Johnson and Chase Sojka. Dru Smith picked up four touchdown passes as part of his 297 yard performance.
The defense shut out the Lions in the second half after allowing 23 points in the first half while picking up five sacks, two forced fumbles, and 16 tackles for loss. Ty Parsons and Zack Biles each led the Tigers with nine tackles.
ETBU scored on their first four possessions for 29 points while SAGU tallied 14. The second quarter saw SAGU cut the lead to 29-20 before McNeill had two touchdown runs for a combined 99 yards giving ETBU a 44-23 lead. The third quarter brought five ETBU touchdowns for 34 points before the Tigers tallied one touchdown in the fourth quarter finishing off with an 85-23 win.
The win put ETBU at 2-0 on the season.
