LONGVIEW, Texas – A second-half comeback came up just short as the East Texas Baptist University men’s basketball fell in the first round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament 89-80 to Hardin-Simmons University. HSU advances to play the University of Texas at Dallas in the semi-final round of the ASC Tournament.
HSU got out to a quick start in the first half, shooting at a 59% mark from the floor to control the first half. ETBU took an 11-10 lead on a Jordan Quillian layup, but HSU would retake the lead shortly after that basket. HSU would stretch their lead in the first half to as many as 15 points, but ETBU would cut the lead down to 11 at halftime.
Dylan Augustine knocked down a three pointer to start the second half off right for ETBU, trading baskets back and forth with HSU, reducing the lead to three points with 10:00 minutes left in the second half. Augustine would use an and-one basket and free throw to bring the score within one 77-76. HSU would knock down free throws late to pull away with the win.
Quillian led the way offensively with 21 points, Will Thomas added 20 points, Augustine finished with 13 points, and Landin Brown chipped in 12 points. Thomas finished with a double-double as he had 11 rebounds, and Jordan Gosey grabbed nine rebounds. ETBU finished with 14 assists in the game, and forced 20 turnovers.
ETBU shot 42% from the floor, 21.7% from behind the arc, and 64.3% from the free throw line. ETBU out rebounded HSU 39-38, and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds during the contest.
All five starters for HSU were in double figures scoring wise, led by Nathaniel Jack with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Justin Jones had 16 points, nine rebounds, and five blocked shots. HSU shot 51% from the floor, 53% from behind the arc, and 81% from the free throw line.
ETBU ends their first season under head coach Brandon Curran with a 15-11 record. ETBU was the number four seed in the ASC tournament. This was the final game for Augustine, Thomas, Quillian, and Tyler Day. Each member is among the career ranks in ETBU history. Augustine and Day finished their career 73-33 while wearing an ETBU jersey.
