AWARDS: Five Players Earn All-ASC

RICHARDSON, Texas – Five East Texas Baptist University men’s soccer players have been recognized by the American Southwest Conference for their play in the 2016 season. Travis Atkinson, Joel Ramirez, Daniel Rutter, Jordan Burke, and David Jackson all received an award.

Senior forward Joel Ramirez and freshman defenseman Travis Atkinson were named to the All-ASC second-team. Sophomore midfielder Daniel Rutter was named to the All-ASC third-team. Senior midfielder David Jackson and junior midfielder Jordan Burke were then named to the All-ASC honorable mention team.

Ramirez (Lindale, Texas) was a transfer from Jacksonville College this season and was second on the team with six goals and finished with three game-winning goals. He scored five goals in a five match stretch, where he scored a career high two goals against Rhodes College during that span.

Atkinson (Palestine, Texas) helped anchor a backline in the ETBU defense that shutout seven opponents in 2016. Atkinson also scored a goal against the University of the Ozarks that helped ETBU extend the match into overtime.  

Rutter (League City, Texas) was third on the team with three goals this season, and was tied for the team lead with two assists. He netted two game-winning goals against Dallas Christian and Howard Payne University. He was also 1-of-1 in penalty kicks this season.

Jackson (Corpus Christi, Texas) led ETBU with seven goals this season and also pitched in one assist. He knocked in two game-winning goals for the Tigers this season and scored in his last four matches at Cornish Field this season, where six of his seven goals were scored. He had a season high three points at home against Howard Payne University.

Burke (League City, Texas) was solid all year long in the center of the field for ETBU. He assumed the captain role for ETBU and helped guide them to nine wins this season. He also scored his first career goal against Louisiana College and helped post seven shutouts.

ETBU finished with a 9-9 record on the year which were the most wins since 2005.
