MARSHALL, Texas – Continuing their home stretch after a week off, the East Texas Baptist University men’s tennis team hosts two matches this weekend at the Veterans’ Memorial Tennis Complex. On Friday, they play Schreiner University at 3:00 p.m. while on Saturday they take on Concordia University-Texas at 10:00 a.m.
In their last time out, ETBU dropped both matches to Millsaps College and Austin College by scores of 7-2. Against Millsaps, Cody Highsmith and John Herr paired together to get a win at No. 2 doubles. Herr would then get the only win in singles at No. 4 when he defeated Aviash Anath by the score of 6-2, 6-4. The next day, Joseph Salinas and Ty Tarver worked together to win the no. 3 doubles 8-5. Salinas also collected the only point in singles play with the 6-3, 0-6, 11-9 score.
Last season against Schreiner on February 26, ETBU fell, 6-3. ETBU also took on Concordia twice and won both times with one of them in the ASC Tournament. On March 12, ETBU clawed to a 5-4 win, which was the start of a turnaround that led ETBU to make the conference tournament for the first time in program history. In the quarterfinals one moth later, ETBU defeated CTX 5-1.
Head coach Jeff Bramlett knows that both teams will bring tough matches to the table. “The Schreiner men’s team is one of the best in the region,” said Bramlett. “We beat them two years ago by pulling off the upset. We’d love to do that again. Last year, we sort of pulled off the upset against Concordia on the men’s side that turned around our season. Then we beat them again in the first round of the conference. We’re hoping to get our first win this weekend and start turning around the season. That’s all we need for some of these freshman to get that confidence and get that first taste of a victory.”
The matches start at 3 PM on Friday and 10 AM on Saturday at the campus of ETBU.
