JACKSON, Miss. – In their first road trip of the season, the #5 East Texas Baptist University softball team swept Belhaven University on the first day of play by outscoring the Blazers, 18-2, in the two games. With the wins, ETBU goes to 4-0 on the season.

In game one, ETBU used the strong pitching and timely hitting to beat the Blazers 7-2. Rocki Tello got the win by going the distance allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out three batters. Offensively, ETBU was led by Gabby Gonzales, who tallied three hits, including a two-RBI home run that put ETBU ahead for good. Linzie Lewis and Jayme Perez both had two hits and drove in a run while Kaitlyn Hollingshead, who had a home run, and Emily Hitt, each had one hit, Hitt also drove in one run as well.

Game two saw ETBU blank the Blazers 11-0 in five innings. Jordan Anderson started the game for ETBU going 1.1 innings allowing one hit. Jayme Perez got the win in relief by pitching 3.2 innings allowing one hit and striking out four batters. Perez was also ETBU’s top hitter as she tallied three hits while driving in four RBIs, including a two-run homer. Katy Hill (two hits), and Lindsey Vasquez (one hit) drove in two RBIs while Lewis again tallied two hits. Belhaven was led by Hannah Holloway, who had the only two hits for the Blazers.

GAME 1 – ETBU 7, Belhaven 2

After a scoreless first inning, BU took the lead on a double and two-out RBI single. Hollingshead would answer with a lead-off home run to tie the game at one apiece. One inning later, ETBU took the lead on a Gonzalez home run at 3-1. ETBU would score in every inning from that point on.

Lewis scored after singling up the middle, stealing third, and touching the plate on an error by the catcher. BU would answer in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the 6th inning, Hitt got on base by a Blazer error before Lewis drove her in with a single. Perez followed that with another single and ETBU led 6-2. The seventh inning saw Gonzales single to center, reach second on a groundout, and scoring from second on an RBI by Hitt. Tello would then shut down the Blazers in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the game one win.

GAME 2 – ETBU 11, Belhaven 0

Once again, the first inning was scoreless but this time ETBU struck first collecting three runs in the second on a bases loaded walk to Hill, a hit by pitch to Vasquez, and an RBI single by Lewis. Two innings later, ETBU struck for four runs in the fourth as Perez had a two-run single, Lacey Lindsey grounded out to drive in a run while Gonzales doubled in the seventh run for ETBU.

Belhaven would threaten to score in the bottom of the fourth as they had two runners in scoring position before Perez struck out Marley Blackwell to end the inning. ETBU added more runs in the fifth when Hill bunted in Hitt to make it 8-0. After Vasquez drove in Hill, Perez drilled a two-run homer to make it 11-0. BU couldn’t get the runs needed to extend the game as Perez shut the door on the Blazers.

ETBU will look to complete the sweep tomorrow against BU at 12:00 PM.
