RICHARDSON, Texas – The East Texas Baptist University softball team dropped a heartbreaker in the opening game of their American Southwest Conference series against the University of Texas at Dallas 8-5. UTD improves to 19-4 overall and 11-2 in ASC play. ETBU falls to 17-3 overall and 10-3 in ASC action.
ETBU jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning on a solo homerun from Lacey Lindsey. Kaitlyn Hollingshead and Linzie Lewis added to the homerun brigade with solo homeruns from each of them to give ETBU a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. UTD used a two run double in the fifth inning to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of ETBU. ETBU added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh giving ETBU a 5-2 lead. UTD used a two-run homerun to bring the score to 5-4. UTD would add one more run to tie the game, then would use a three-run homerun to walk off as winners.
ETBU was led by Lewis with three hits and Lindsey with two hits. Lindsey and Gabby Gonzales each walked two times in the game. Hollingshead, Lewis, Lindsey, and Katy Hill each picked up one run. Rocki Tello picked up the loss, pitching in 6.2 innings allowing six earned runs and eight hits.
Allie Stephens earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. Melissa Livermore had two hits to lead the UTD offense. Samantha Halliburton had one hit, but it was the biggest hit as it won the game for the Comets.
ETBU and UTD will resume the series tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. double header. The second game will begin 25 minutes after the first game concludes.
