MARSHALL, Texas – Looking to build on last season’s ASC Semifinalist finish, the East Texas Baptist University enter the second season under the guidance of head coach Keely Peterson. Last season, ETBU finished with a 13-14 record overall and 5-7 conference record. But ETBU went 3-2 in the ASC Championship Tournament.
Head coach Peterson on the 2017 season, "I am excited how this schedule came together. We sought out great competition for our nonconference schedule. There is not a better way to see where you are than to play against amazing, established programs. The process is what it is all about, and developing the mental toughness and grit we need to have to be successful in the ASC. The Southwestern and Trinity tournaments will be great in that development, and it is important for the team to look for areas we can be successful against these teams, as we continue to grow into the team we want to be by conference tournament."
The upcoming schedule sees ETBU competing in six home games at Ornelas Gym as they host Centenary (Sep. 5), Texas-Dallas (Sep. 12), Louisiana College (Sep. 29), Belhaven (Sep. 30), LeTourneau (Oct. 3), and Texas-Tyler (Oct. 24). They will have road matches against their ASC East counterparts on September 19 (UTT), October 10 (UTD), 17 (LETU), 20 (LC), and 21 (BU).
Peterson on the home matches, "We have a few more home games this season which is very exciting. It is always such a fun and competitive environment when we get to play in Ornelas. Louisiana College added volleyball this season and we are excited to be able to host them and Belhaven in the same weekend. We will also be hosting Centenary early in the season which should be a great atmosphere. Our fans are so great at ETBU and we love being able to have them as a part of our competition."
ETBU will also take part in five tournaments for the season. Their first tournament will take place at Millsaps. On September 1, ETBU will play Agnes Scott and Millsaps. The following day, the Tigers will show down against Rhodes and La Grange. After facing Centenary, ETBU will travel to Georgetown for three games with Southwestern, Puget Sound and Christopher Newport on September 8 and 9.
Tournament number three will take place in San Antonio as ETBU plays Southwestern and Pomona Pitzer on September 15 while facing Trinity and Texas Lutheran the next day. ETBU’s fourth and fifth tournaments are ASC Crossovers with dates on September 22 in Longview and October 13 in Abilene.
