RICHARDSON, Texas – Amongst the elite in the American Southwest Conference, senior Shelby Taylor-Spencer has been voted as a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete recipient for women’s cross country. Spencer is a co-recipient for the women’s cross country award voted on by the sports information directors of the ASC.
“Shelby being recognized as a distinguished scholar-athlete is a testament to her hard work and dedication in the classroom each day," Vice President for Athletics Ryan Erwin said. "AT ETBU, our coaching staff continues to make academics a priority and this has helped shape the academic performance and experience of our entire department. Shelby is very deserving of this award and exhibits what we desire for all of our student-athletes as she understands the importance of excelling in competition, in the classroom, and in her pursuit of graduation”
Spencer has a 4.0 grade point average as a senior and is in her final semester at ETBU. She is an Elementary Education major from Flint, Texas. Her senior year was her finest as she won two meets and was the ASC runner of the week twice and never finished lower than seventh in a regular season meet. At the ASC Championships, she was seventh and earned her second straight All-ASC first-team award along with being named the Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
Head cross country coach Natalie Bach-Prather says, “Shelby has worked incredibly hard in the classroom and in her running career to get to this point. It hasn’t been an easy journey but she has done an amazing job and deserves this success.”
In four years, Spencer has been a three-time ASC All-Academic team member and All-ASC runner. She has also helped ETBU to finish in the top tier of teams the past two years in the ASC Championship meet.
