TYLER, Texas – In the first round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, the East Texas Baptist University women’s soccer team saw their season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to the University of Texas-Tyler Patriots. With the loss, ETBU finishes their season with a record of 6-8-4 overall.
Throughout the game, ETBU was outshot 20-10 overall. UTT also had five corners while ETBU had one corner kick. ETBU led in saves with six while UTT had two saves.
For ETBU, Heather Brady and Claire Hamilton led the team with two shots each. Erin Miller, Kendall Vogt, Kalynn Hudman, Emilee Laxson, Gabrielle Henley also had a shot in the game while Megan Friend got the only goal for ETBU. For UTT, Brittany Matthews had four shots, including a goal. Vanessa Rangel (assist) also had four shots. Caitlyn Mortus, Courtney Hunt, and Taylor Tarsi also had a goal for the Patriots.
Six minutes into the game, the Patriots struck first on a goal by Mortus with an assist by Rangel. It wasn’t until the 15:21 mark that ETBU got their first shot of the game. At 18:24, Friend tied the game at 1-1, but the lead would be short-lived as twenty-five seconds later, Matthews netted what would end up being the game-winning goal. ETBU had three chances to tie at halftime, but came up short.
Just eight minutes into the second half, Tarsi scored the third goal for UTT in what would be her third goal of the season. ETBU had more chances to score, but UTT keeper Emily Hurley and the Patriots defense denied them of tallying. The fourth goal for UTT came at 79:31 by Hunt.
ETBU finishes with six wins on the season and making their sixth tournament in the past decade.
