#TIGERSWIN | WS | Five Goal Surge Powers Tigers Past Hendrix

MARSHALL, Texas — A five goal outburst propelled East Texas Baptist University to a commanding  5-1 victory over Hendrix College on Wednesday night in women's soccer action at Cornish Field. ETBU scored three times in the first half and added two more after halftime, finishing with 20 shots and 13 on goal. Hendrix generated 11 second-half shots, but the Tigers made six saves in the half and eight overall to limit the response.

Grace Shurley scored the second goal of the game and added an assist to finish with three points. Madelynne Miller recorded six saves in 45 minutes in goal. Ava Trevino scored the first goal and put both of her shots on goal. Lenah Montes added a goal on two shots, both on goal. Rylie Graul and Claire Flowers also scored late in the second half.

ETBU converted its early pressure into a first-half lead, with Trevino scoring at 6:27 off Shurley's assist before Shurley added a goal at 11:20 from Analissa Gutierrez to make it 2-0. The home side had already recorded a saved shot from Madeline Rumachik, a corner kick and another attempt from Giselle Laredo in the first four minutes, then continued to create chances through Caroline Smith, Rumachik and Laredo after the two goals. Hendrix answered with a corner and several looks between the 11th and 24th minutes, but Taylor Lauster made saves on shots from Mikey Preiss and Chloe Peters to keep the Tigers in front. ETBU generated another stretch of pressure late in the half with shots from Lenah Montes, Kelsey Flanakin, Alaia Privett and Hannah Gradilla around two corner kicks, and Montes finished the half's scoring at 44:16 from Flanakin's assist for a 3-0 halftime lead.

ETBU answered Hendrix's second-half goal with Graul's 76:17 finish from Madison Martinez and Flowers' 88:12 goal from Grace Dale, closing out a 5-1 win. Earlier, Miller handled shots from Evi Kolman in the 46th and 51st minutes as the Tigers kept the match at 3-0 before building pressure of their own. From 58:35 to 65:16, ETBU recorded four shots and three corner kicks, including saves on Trevino and Alaia Privett attempts. Hendrix broke through at 73:09 when Nina Smith scored off a Chloe Peters assist to make it 3-1, but the Tigers responded with Flanakin's shot, a corner kick and Graul's goal less than three minutes later. Miller added late saves on Grace Sandoval and Kaylee Fluger before Flowers finished the scoring, and ETBU reached full time with the 5-1 result.

ETBU travels to Clarksville, Ark., to face the University of the Ozarks on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, at 7 p.m. at Wilson Athletic Complex.
