“Today we went to Lisbon University and talked to the students across campus about various topics with an overlapping theme. The questions we asked the students had to do with how they like their life now, how they want their life to look like in the future, and who God is to them. These questions brought great dialogue between us and the students. There was no problem with the language barrier due to the fact that most of the Lisbon University students spoke English.
All of the team got to take a deep dive into the students personal lives and got to form a connection. I enjoyed doing this because it made the students really look at themselves and we were able to be the people they talked about it with. The team was split into groups of two so we had roughly around nine groups total, meaning that we got to talk to a lot of students. When we finished, we met up as a team and discussed our findings. We concluded that most of the students were agnostic and really stressed out by college and all the studying that comes along with it.
After lunch we headed an hour and a half away from our hotel to play a soccer game versus a very good opponent. We went into the game with a lot of confidence and played very well. The opponents were exceptional and played very unlike any team we have played before. Their technical ability was second to none and they could keep possession with no problem. This did not intimidate us and we were to keep up with them and the score at halftime was 0-0. We both had good opportunities to score in the first half but neither could capitalize on the chances.
The second half did not go how we expected. Our starting goalie was hurt so we had to put a field player in as goalie and the other team went on to score three goals beating us of a score 3-0. It was a hard fought game, but sadly we could not come out with a win. It was still an enjoyable game and a very invaluable experience.
After the game, we went to go eat at a local burger place near the stadium and enjoyed good conversation. Overall, this trip has been such a good experience for the team and the me because we have been able to experience a completely different culture, share our faith, as well as play soccer,” Senior Garrett Garvin, a business administration major said.
