TAME | VB | Chile - Recap 1

The ETBU Volleyball team departed Texas for Chile on Friday afternoon as a part of ETBU’s Tiger Athletic Mission Experience (TAME). This is the 19th trip as a part of the ETBU Athletic Department TAME initiative and second for Tiger Volleyball, after the Tigers traveled to Serbia in 2018.  ETBU is partnering with TRANSFORMA for the week and will offer free volleyball clinics, conduct service in the local schools and communities, and play three games.

The first recap of the week is provided by Sophomore Taylor Poore.

We landed in Santiago on Saturday morning around 8 AM after traveling overnight on the plane. When we landed, we got to eat our first Chilean meal for breakfast and then hung out in the airport the rest of the day until our next flight to Temuco at 4 PM. We landed in Temuco around 5:30 and went straight to our hotel to change and get ready to go to a youth group service at Fist Baptist Church Temuco.

When we got to the church, we were able to meet so many new people that were around our age.  Their main language is Spanish, but most people were able to speak a little bit of English. The people there were so welcoming to us and excited for us to be there. After we introduced ourselves to the youth, we all went to our seats to start worship. They lead songs in Spanish, but also had the English words on the screen as well. This part of the night was so, so special because I have never been in a space to worship the Lord in that kind of atmosphere before. Their church leader mentioned that even though we may not speak the same language, we are still worshipping the same God and that is something that stuck with me. As we worshipped, most people were singing in Spanish and some of us were singing in English, and it was such a cool thing to witness. It was eye opening to see God's goodness and presence in another country and culture! We were all so different - culture, backgrounds, etc. - but we were still all gathered together for the same reason. That was something I will never forget!

After we worshipped through song, we played a game that was like charades, which was a fun time because everyone let loose and was just having fun.  We were all chanting and cheering for our teams and it was a great time for everyone in the room.

After the game, the head of their church came onto stage to give us a message. He was speaking in Spanish but had a translator that was repeating what he was saying in English so that we could understand.  The passage that we were in was Psalm 23, so he read that to us and gave us some key points. ‘The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing’ was a verse that stuck out to me as we went through the message. He reminded us that we serve a God that comes to find His sons and daughters and He promises that He is the one that can guide every step of our life, no matter the circumstances. Their preacher even went into sharing parts of his testimony and how this passage was true in his own personal life. After this, we sang in worship for a few more songs and then moved onto dinner.

For dinner, we went into a room where a long table was set up with all sorts of drinks, snacks, and desserts. As we ate dinner, we got to get to know many of the youth, which was very enjoyable.  I talked to many people, but I got to know four people really well. They told me about themselves and even taught me words and phrases in their language. After they taught me, I taught them how to say ‘Howdy, y'all’ and they loved it.  It was just such a fun time of getting to know them and building relationships  Before we left, we all jumped around and sang Amazing Grace and Praise. This was not scheduled, so it was mainly our team and a few instruments with us jumping around and praising the Lord. It was a very cool experience to look around and see all of these people dancing for the Lord with us.  The Lord was definitely in the room and it was something I will never forget.

When we got back to our hotel, we all sat as a team and Hannah Perry and I shared our testimonies. It was such a special and vulnerable time to share the ways God has moved in our lives! We have already grown closer as a team and I know that it is just going to keep growing this week.

We have not even been here for a whole day yet, but the Lord is already working through this trip and the people we have met, and I believe that we He has worked through us to the people here as well! Chile and its people are already so special to me and I am so excited for what the Lord has in store for the rest of the week!
