Box Score RICHARDSON, Texas – The top two teams in the American Southwest Conference East Division squared off against each other as the #20 University of Texas Dallas came away with a three-set win over East Texas Baptist University, 25-18, 25-19, 25-20. ETBU is now 20-4 overall and 8-3 in the ASC East, and the loss ends its nine-match winning streak.
For the night, ETBU had a team attack percentage of .112, while Texas Dallas (21-2, 9-0 ASC) hit right at .250. Madison Riley had nine kills and five digs, and Mallory Sanders contributed seven kills and seven digs. Reighanna Guzman totaled 15 assists and 17 digs, while Alexis Zolan chipped in an even 10 assists. Elonu had a half dozen kills, three total blocks and four digs, and Hannah Jones finished with 10 digs.
Texas Dallas bolted out to a 5-0 advantage in set one before a block assist by Elonu and Sanders put ETBU on the board. Later trailing by a 15-7 score, ETBU strung together four-consecutive points to draw within four at 15-11, capped by a Kailey Cavanaugh kill and a subsequent Texas Dallas timeout. That four-point deficit, however, proved to be as close as ETBU would come in the opening set with Texas Dallas prevailing, 25-18, courtesy of a set-clinching block assist.
Moving along to the set two, ETBU nabbed the first pair of points, including a Riley kill, but the action remained neck-and-neck with the score later knotted at 10-10. Four-straight Texas Dallas points swelled its edge to 15-11, yet ETBU hung around as late as 21-18 after another kill by Riley. Texas Dallas would then claim four-of-five points to edge ETBU in the second set, 25-19. Kristyn Schott had the decisive kill for Texas Dallas.
In what turned out to the night's final set, a seven-point spurt put ETBU in the lead, 11-7, following a kill by Elonu. After a Texas Dallas run put ETBU behind, 13-11, five-consecutive ETBU points surged it back into the lead, 16-13. Sanders had back-to-back kills to make it 16-13 in favor of ETBU before Texas Dallas' bench called a timeout. Yet again Texas Dallas strung together point after point, however, to assume a 21-19 advantage further on down the line. Texas Dallas grabbed four-of-final five points, closing out the night, 25-20.
For Texas Dallas, Schott had 13 kills and 11 digs, and Michelle Toro contributed a dozen kills and four total blocks. Kayla Jordan had 42 assists while Fayna Zeng finished with 22 digs.
ETBU will be off for 11 days as it competes next in the University of Texas-Tyler Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 31st, facing Hendrix College at 11:30 a.m.
