Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – Playing in heavy rain on Friday evening, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team tied visiting University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 1-1, in double overtime at Cornish Field. Originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, the match eventually kicked off after 6 p.m. The result puts ETBU's overall record at 2-11-1 and 2-4-1 in American Southwest Conference competition. Meanwhile, Mary Hardin-Baylor is now 6-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in ASC matches.
In the opening half, ETBU scored the first goal of the match during the 34th minute. Following a foul assessed against Mary Hardin-Baylor, Jose Vega sent a free kick into the left side of the penalty box, and teammate Pablo Jaimes headed the ball into the back of the net. ETBU's 1-0 edge held at the halftime whistle. During the first half, Mary Hardin-Baylor trailed ETBU by a single goal, but held edges in shots (13-to-2) and corner kicks (7-to-2).
Further on in the second half, Mary Hardin-Baylor tied the match in the 64th minute. Luke Lopez sent a pass far upfield, and Julio Mar sprinted, dribbled a good while and kicked the ball into the back left of the net. At the whistle to end regulation, the match remained tied at a goal apiece. Once again, Mary Hardin-Baylor edged ETBU in the second half in terms of shots (16-to-2) and corner kicks (5-to-1).
In the two overtime periods, arguably the strongest look for ETBU came in 93rd minute. Joel Botello received a feed, and his header banged off the left side post as the match eventually ended in a 1-1 tie.
In net for ETBU, Juan Perales made 15 saves, while Mary Hardin-Baylor goalkeeper Javier Zaragoza stopped a pair of shots. ETBU plays its final regular-season home match tomorrow against Concordia University (Texas) at 3 p.m. Senior Day festivities are set prior to the opening kick.
