Volleyball Splits Two Matches

TYLER, Texas – The East Texas Baptist University volleyball team played a pair of matches on Saturday inside of the Patriot Center on the campus of University of Texas-Tyler and went 1-1. ETBU lost to Hendrix College (Ark.), 3-0, but later topped University of Dallas by an identical 3-0 score. Set scores for ETBU against Hendrix were 23-25, 15-25, 22-25 and then 25-15, 25-11, 25-19, against Dallas.

To begin the day, ETBU paired up with a Hendrix team that also received votes toward the Oct. 27 edition of the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Top 25 Poll for NCAA Division III.

Set one saw both teams hit under .150 with Hendrix posting a .125 attacking rate, and ETBU hitting at a .030 clip. ETBU went ahead by a 5-1 margin with Madison Riley and Allison Sevening contributing a kill apiece, and Hendrix committing three attack errors. The momentum shifted, however, as Hendrix claimed five-consecutive points capped by an MC Rogers kill. ETBU responded by winning six-of-seven points to push ahead, 11-7, and later led by a four-point margin at 14-10.

A six-point spurt brought Hendrix back into the lead, 16-14, and the opening set was tied as late 23-23 before Hendrix won the decisive final two points to emerge victorious, 25-23.

The second set proved to be determined by a decidedly wider margin. Following a Bailee Moore kill that tied set two at 6-6, Hendrix burst ahead to an 11-6 edge and kept it moving en route to a second-set win, 25-15. ETBU ended set two with a -.125 attack rate, while Hendrix hit .207.

In the third and final set, ETBU led at 10-7 and later trailed by a narrow 23-22 margin, but dropped the final two points of the match. Lauren Petrinsin had back-to-back kills to clinch the straight-set sweep for Hendrix, 25-22.

In all, ETBU had a team attack percentage of -.018, and Hendrix posted a .134 hitting percentage. For ETBU, Mallory Sanders had seven kills and two total blocks to go along with a match-high 22 digs. Adaeze Elonu contributed five kills and five total blocks, while Reighanna Guzman totaled nine assists and five digs. For Hendrix, Petrinsin finished with a match-leading nine kills, and Allison Gaia and Holyn Duyck contributed 13 assists apiece. Rogers had seven kills, four total blocks, 11 digs and three service aces.

Later in the afternoon, ETBU (21-5) faced Dallas for the second time this season and won in straight sets. Sanders led all players with a dozen kills to go along with 11 digs and three service aces. Guzman contributed a team-high 21 assists and two service aces, while Elonu had 10 kills and six total blocks. Alexis Zolan totaled 15 assists, and Hannah Jones had a team-best 21 digs.

With its regular season now in the books, ETBU moves forward and competes in the American Southwest Championship Tournament. Its first postseason match will be on Nov. 5 against Hardin-Simmons University in Richardson, Texas, at noontime.
