Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – In a match that was knotted up at a goal apiece through 60 minutes, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to prevail, 3-2, over visiting Belhaven University on Friday afternoon at Cornish Field. The victory moves ETBU to 3-7-0 overall, while the loss drops Belhaven to 3-6-1.
In the 61st minute, Heather Brady charged toward the Belhaven goal and maneuvered around goalkeeper Alexis Molero, finishing the run with a rolling kick into the lower-right net. Barely over three minutes later, Stephanie Castillo pushed ETBU's lead to 3-1 after kicking in a pass upfield from teammate Amber Pless in the 64th minute. Belhaven did, however, cut the deficit to a single goal in 77th minute on a Jessica Mahoney goal as Emily Chastain earned an assist on the play.
The first half of the match featured a single goal by each team. Brady took a pass from teammate Alexis Smith in the middle of the box and converted for the match's first goal during the 12th minute. ETBU remained ahead by that 1-0 margin until Belhaven's Ashely Harber converted on a free kick following a penalty within the ETBU penalty box early in the 29th minute. That goal tied the match up, 1-1, a score that held at the halftime buzzer.
For the match, ETBU held a 13-to-8 shot advantage, including a 9-to-6 shot on-goal edge. In net, Christina Salas made four saves for ETBU, while Belhaven goalkeeper Molero made a half dozen saves.
ETBU hosts Louisiana College in an American Southwest Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m.
