ETBU Home Opener Ends in Defeat to UTD

MARSHALL, Texas – It was a packed Ornelas Gym for the home and American Southwest Conference opener of the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team (7-2, 0-1 ASC East) but the University of Texas Dallas (8-2, 1-0 ASC East) came back to win the final three sets ending the home win streak, 3-1. ETBU won the first set 25-17 but then fell 20-25, 21-25, and 20-25 as the 18-match home winning streak came to an end.

ETBU came out and hit a match-high .351 in set one. Conversely, Texas Dallas posted a .152 attacking percentage in the first set. Sanders had six of her 18 kills in this set hitting .267 overall. Both Adeaze Elonu and Abby Weaver added three kills each, also. After a 13-13 tie, ETBU scored four of the next five points for a 17-14 lead with two of the four points coming from kills by Weaver. Texas Dallas cut the lead to two, 17-15, but ETBU scored eight of the next 10 points for the set win. Texas Dallas came within three, 20-17, as that was their final points. A kill by Rebekeh Troy and two service aces from Morgan Rupp pushed the lead to 23-17. Texas Dallas had an attack error and then Sanders finished off the set with her sixth kill for ETBU's lone set win.

In set two, the action remained tied up as late as 17-17 after a Troy kill. Texas Dallas, however, claimed eight-of-11 points to wrap up their victory, capped by an ETBU attacking error. With the match now tied at a set apiece, Texas Dallas continued attacking ETBU, but the third set was knotted up at 17-17 following a Mallory Sanders kill. A string of five-straight Texas Dallas points put them ahead, 22-17, and an ETBU service error closed out the set for the Comets.

The fourth set brought a strong start from Texas Dallas as the ran out to a 14-2 edge. ETBU did, however, fight back to within 18-16 score before ultimately falling on Abbie Barth's match-clinching kill.

Sanders paced ETBU with 18 kills and added 11 digs. Reighanna Guzman contributed 22 assists and 10 digs, while Alexis Zolan had 16 assists as well as 14 digs. Hannah Jones led ETBU with 17 digs while Abby Weaver hit .409 with nine kills.

For Texas Dallas, Holyn Handley paced all players with 19 kills and Kayla Jordan had a match-high 46 assists. Barth totaled 14 kills and 18 digs while Fanyna Zeng had a match-leading 20 digs.

ETBU returns to Ornelas Gym on Thursday for a match with 11th-ranked Colorado College at 6:00 p.m.
