Centenary 2nd Half Surge Drops ETBU in Opener

Box Score

SHREVEPORT, La. - A three-goal performance by Centenary College's Marissa Hughes, including the match's final two scores, proved to be the difference as the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team dropped its season opener, 4-2, to the Ladies.

Playing at Mayo Field in Shreveport, Louisiana, the teams combined to score four goals in just a hair over 18 minutes into the match. ETBU's Stephanie Castillo's equalizing goal in the early part of 19th minute drew the match even at 2-2 and then neither team would find the back of the net again until the 41st minute.

Centenary's Hughes tallied the tie-breaking goal in that 41st minute of play to give the Ladies (1-0) a 3-2 edge heading into the half. She completed her three-goal, one-assist performance with the match's final goal in the 61st minute to account for day's final score.

ETBU lost the match despite holding a few edges in the final box score. ETBU fired off over twice as many shots as Centenary (22-to-10) and attempted three times as many corner kicks (9-to-3).

Castillo finished the match with six shots (two on-goal) and a goal, while Erin Miller fired off seven shots (five on-goal) and connected for a goal in the sixth minute. Sasha Kotowych earned an assist on Miller's goal.

Along with Hughes' seven-point performance, Maddy Brown also scored for Centenary with the first goal of the match right near the tail end of the third minute of action.

In goal for ETBU, Elizabeth Hudspeth allowed three goals in the first half. During the entire second half, Maria Franco played in goal, stopping a single shot and allowing a single goal.

Centenary goalkeeper Erica Coker made nine saves and surrendered a pair of goals.

Up next for ETBU is another road match on Friday afternoon at Texas Lutheran. The opening kick is set for 2 p.m. CT at Gustafson Field in Seguin, Texas.
