Box Score SEGUIN, Texas – Locked in a scoreless match deep into the second half, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team allowed three goals in a five-plus-minute span, as host Texas Lutheran University prevailed, 3-0. In the first of two-straight away matches in central Texas this weekend for ETBU (0-2), the team managed to hang with Texas Lutheran (2-0).
For the day, Texas Lutheran owned advantages in shots (22-to-12), shots on-goal (8-to-3) and corner kicks (12-to-1).
In the first half, Texas Lutheran applied pressure right away and advanced the ball into the ETBU defensive half often.
When the buzzer sounded for the halftime intermission, Texas Lutheran had forced ETBU goalkeeper Tyler Garner to stop five shots and also took five corner kicks. In comparison, ETBU closed the opening half with five shots- none on-goal- and zero corner kicks.
As the second half began, ETBU fired its first shot on-goal, courtesy of Matthew Argenbright in the 50th minute. Argenbright's shot, however, found Texas Lutheran goalkeeper Jonathan Michael's hands for a goalkeeper save as the score remained deadlocked.
ETBU's Hugo Orta fired off a pair of shots on-goal in a six-plus-minute span, but both attempts were stymied by Texas Lutheran's Michael. Those two shots on-goal turned out to be ETBU's last shots on-goal for the remainder of the action.
As the match reached the 85th minute of regulation, Texas Lutheran busted through and pulled away suddenly.
Texas Lutheran's Alejandro Martinez found the back of the ETBU goal in that 85th minute to push it to a 1-0 match. Less than four minutes later, Miguel Cadelario headed in a feed from Martinez in the 88th to swell Texas Lutheran's edge to 2-0. To cap the match's scoring, Eric Mendez kicked home the ball in the final minute to account for the 3-0 final score. Isaac Lopez earned an assist on the play.
In his first career start in net for ETBU, Garner stopped eight shots and allowed three goals.
Texas Lutheran goalkeeper Michael made three saves, all in the second half, in the shutout victory.
ETBU moves on to face host Schreiner University in a Saturday matchup. The action is scheduled for a 4 p.m. CT start in Kerrville, Texas, at Mountaineer Field.
