ETBU Shots Can't Find Net; Falls 2-0 to TLU

SEGUIN, Texas – Playing its second road match in four days, the East Texas Baptist University's women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback at Texas Lutheran University.

ETBU (0-2) fell despite finishing the day with a 23-to-13 advantage in shots. Additionally, ETBU fired eight shots on-goal, while Texas Lutheran totaled only three.

As play got underway at Gustafson Field, Texas Lutheran slowly began to string together successively stronger runs in the ETBU defensive half. During the 12th minute, Texas Lutheran capitalized against ETBU goalkeeper Maria Franco and the defensive unit.

With the ball well into the ETBU defensive field, Texas Lutheran's Jessica Coronado dribbled upfield toward the ETBU penalty box and sent a pass ahead to teammate Sioned Kirkpatrick. ETBU goalkeeper Franco moved forward toward the live ball, and Kirkpatrick sent a rolling kick across the grass and into the near-side post for the match's first goal.

Now trailing by a single goal, ETBU continued to attack the Texas Lutheran defense only to have numerous shot attempts blocked by Texas Lutheran defenders.

During the 38th minute, ETBU's Alexis Smith let off a shot attempt from outside the near side of the Texas Lutheran penalty box, but Smith's shot collided with a Texas Lutheran defender before bouncing once or twice into the grasp of Erin Rose for a goalkeeper save.

With the first half clock under 10 seconds, Texas Lutheran's Courtney Gros charged toward the ETBU goal, but Gros' shot went wide as the halftime buzzer sounded with Texas Lutheran holding a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the opening half alone, ETBU fired off 13 shots, including four on-goal, while Texas Lutheran totaled six shots. ETBU also attempted seven corner kicks compared to just a pair by Texas Lutheran.

Into the second half, Texas Lutheran struck for what would be the final goal of the afternoon.

On the counterattack into ETBU's defensive half, Texas Lutheran seized on a failed clear by ETBU during the 53rd minute. Still between the posts for ETBU, Franco moved within the penalty box, and Texas Lutheran swarmed in, with Krystel Wolfe scooting the ball into the middle of the net. Kirkpatrick earned an assist on Wolfe's goal to put Texas Lutheran ahead by a 2-0 margin.

Texas Lutheran switched goalkeepers in the 58th minute as Nichole Glazener replaced Rose in net.

For the second-straight match, ETBU's Stephanie Castillo displayed aggressiveness on the offensive side, finishing with a match-high six shots, including one on-goal. Brady attempted five shots, while Erin Miller finished with four shots.

For Texas Lutheran, Kirkpatrick chipped in on both goals, totaling three shots, one goal and an assist.

In her first start between the posts for ETBU, Franco stopped one shot while allowing both goals during the match.

Texas Lutheran starting goalkeeper Rose played 57-plus minutes, making a half dozen saves, before Glazener entered and played the final 32-plus minutes. Glazener stopped two shots.

ETBU travels next to Kerrville, Texas, to face Schreiner University for a Saturday afternoon match. The action is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT kickoff at Mountaineer Field.
