Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – All five starters for the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team landed in double figures stopping LeTourneau University who was one of the hottest teams in the American Southwest Conference, 77-60. ETBU now holds an overall 13-5 record with a 6-3 record in the ASC East.
April Leonard led the team with 17 points while Lauren Lee and Taylee Alexander led the team with 16 points apiece. Malaisia Chisholm added 11 points and four assists to the team while Morgan Garrett had 10 points and six assists. For LETU, Crystal Jones had a game-high 26 points while Ashley Stephens had 13 rebounds to lead all players.
Overall, ETBU outshot the Yellow Jackets 51%-26% from the field and they also hit 37% from behind the arc compared with the 14% made by LETU. ETBU had 32 points in the paints while LETU had 28. ETBU also dished out 20 assists while allowing 10 by LETU.
ETBU got off to a tremendous start with back to back threes by Lee and Leonard to make it 6-2. Following five straight Yellow Jacket points, ETBU would increase their lead to six with that would put it at 13-7 following a three by Ambrosia Woodard. LETU would cut ETBU's lead down to 15-13 before ETBU brought their lead to 20-13 on baskets by Alexander and Leonard. A final basket by LETU made it 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw brilliant plays made by Chisholm and Garrett. Garrett started the quarter with a three to give ETBU an eight point cushion. LETU would cut ETBU's lead to three points on two occasions at 25-22 and 28-25. But six second quarter points by Chisholm would key an 11-5 run to end the half. A layup by Alexander and a three by Lee with two seconds to go would give ETBU a 39-30 lead at the break.
In the third, ETBU ran off with a 15-4 run to make it 54-34. Lee would be the catalyst with six points in the quarter while Alexander collected four in the quarter. Leonard would also help with five in that quarter. The Yellow Jackets did finish the quarter with a 9-4 run and after three, ETBU had a 58-43 lead.
ETBU continued the momentum in the third quarter by increasing their lead to 62-45. But the Yellow Jackets, led by Jones, and Latanya Drakes, would make their back into the game by going on a 15-7 run to get the game back into double-digits with 2:22 to play. ETBU would ultimately put the game out of reach with free throws by Leonard and a layup by Alexander to grab the victory.
ETBU will host Texas-Tyler at Ornelas this Saturday. Tip off will start at 1:00 p.m.
