SRSU Hands ETBU First ASC Conference Loss

ALPINE, Texas – The East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team's six game winning streak was halted by Sul Ross State in a 68-61 defeat in Alpine, Texas. The loss puts ETBU at 10-3 for the season while 4-1 in American Southwest Conference play. After a tight first quarter with ETBU leading, the second and third quarters proved to be the difference as they were outscored in those quarters 36-25.

For ETBU, two players were in double figures. Cekret Davis was the main catalyst as she put in 15 points and had eight rebound and three assists. Taylee Alexander also had double figures with 12 points. Defensively, Lauren Lee and April Leonard led the team with eight and seven rebounds respectfully. For Sul Ross State, Shannon Villaneuva was the leader as she piled up 20 points and seven rebounds. Kenya Miles also helped out the Lobos with 14 points while Jonette Jackson had eight rebounds to lead her team.

Overall, ETBU won two-thirds of the shooting categories with a 39.7%-37.9% in field goal percentage and a 70.6%-56.3% edge in free throws. They also won the rebound battle with a 47-41 margin. But Sul Ross State took care of ETBU in the three-point game by making 30% to ETBU's 23%

ETBU got off to a quick start led by Alexander, who hit her first three shots of the game. After Sul Ross State cut the lead to 8-4, the next five ETBU points came from the bench by Delia Hopkins and Ambrosia Woodard to make it 13-4. Leonard's layup would make it a 15-4 lead before Sul Ross would make a 12-5 charge to end the first quarter with ETBU ahead 20-16.

SRSU would take command of the second quarter by outscoring ETBU 24-14. Jumping out to a 14-2 run, Sul Ross State had baskets by Villanueva, Miles, and Aeriel Holiday. But ETBU would only get to within six after a Davis three-pointer at the 3:20 mark at 32-26. Both teams would trade eight points between them as SRSU led ETBU 40-34 at the break.

The Lobos would continue the momentum as they would win the quarter 12-8 in a defensive struggle. Lauren Lee would make a jumper to cut the gap to within four to start the quarter, but ETBU was unable to get closer. Baskets by Miles, and Ashley Minjarez made it 44-36 at 7:12. After Malasia Chisholm got ETBU to within four, SRSU finished with an 8-2 run to end the third quarter with them leading 52-42 thanks to two three's by Villanueva.

ETBU suddenly caught fire and came out of the gate for the fourth quarter with Davis leading the charge. Once again, ETBU got to within four, but once again, they could not get any closer. A basket by Miles, two free throws by Jackson and a jumper by Minjarez put Sul Ross State ahead 61-54 with 3:03 left. Sul Ross State was able to convert their free throws to extend their lead and ultimately give ETBU their first conference loss.

ETBU will return to Ornelas Gym to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor this Thursday night. Tip off starts at 5:30 p.m.
