Box Score RICHARDSON, Texas – Concluding their UTD Crossover, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team defeated Sul Ross State three sets to one with scores of 25-14, 25-20, 22-25, and 25-18. With the 2-1 record in the crossover, ETBU improves to 7-10 overall and 5-5 in the American Southwest Conference.
Leading the way for ETBU was Mallory Sanders with 18 digs and nine kills while Britni Mosher had 11 kills. Morgan Rupp contributed with 25 digs while Kayla Green had 16 assists. ETBU had a .195 hitting percentage with 49 assists.
As a team defensively, ETBU held Sul Ross State to a .139 hitting percentage and 45 kills. Brittany Serrano had a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Candice Hugi had 10 kills while Katie Reeves 16 digs. McKenna Jane Thomas (22 digs) and Hannah Zly (11 digs) also played roles for the Lobos.
Set one saw ETBU take a lead at 2-1, which they would never give up. SRSU would come as close as 8-6 before ETBU ran off with the first set scoring 17 to the Lobos' eight points. In the second set, SRSU took a 3-2 lead before trading points with ETBU. Twice, the score was tied at 6-6 and 12-12 before a kill by Elyse Shaw gave ETBU the go-ahead point needed to secure the lead for good. The Lobos would cut the lead to two, but ETBU finished with a 25-20 set win for a 2-0 lead.
In set three, ETBU would have a 14-12 edge, but SRSU would score seven unanswered points for a 19-14 lead. ETBU would cut the lead to 21-19 and 24-22 before the Lobos got the final point for a set three win of 25-22. SRSU jumped out to a 6-3 lead before ETBU would string together an 8-2 run for a 14-8 lead. The momentum continued for ETBU as they would build a seven point lead at 19-12. SRSU got the deficit to 20-16, but the Tigers capped off the win with a 5-2 run for the score of 25-18.
ETBU returns home on Tuesday at Ornelas where they will face off against the #9 University of Texas Dallas. The game starts at 7:00 pm.
