RECAP: ETBU Falls in Wild ASC Finale

LONGVIEW, Texas – It was a wild finish to American Southwest Conference action for the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team and LeTourneau University played all five sets (21-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-17, 9-15) to settle this rivalry game. ETBU and LETU split the season series 1-1, as ETBU won the match earlier this season in Marshall.

LETU jumped out to a two set lead winning the first two sets in close fashion 25-21 and 25-20. ETBU dominated the third and fourth sets 25-11 and 25-17 to tie the match at two sets apiece. LETU ultimately would finish off the match winning the decisive fifth set over ETBU 15-9.

LETU finishes ASC play with their first conference win of the season to finish 1-11 in conference play and will not make the ASC tournament. LETU is now 8-21 overall with four matches remaining on their schedule. ETBU drops to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in ASC play. ETBU has two matches in the Texas Lutheran Volleyball Tournament this weekend before the ASC tournament.

Skylar Horan had 14 kills to lead the Yellow Jackets, and Savanna Stutts and Dolores Henson had 12 kills each in the winning effort. Nicole Mosley and Alexis Martinez led LETU with 21 assists and 20 assists for a balanced attack. Liz Williams led LETU with 15 digs, and Martinez and Mosley teamed up with 13 digs each. LETU hit .165 in the match as a team.

ETBU was led offensively by Mallory Sanders who had a match-high 15 kills, followed by Allison Sevening who set a new career-high with 13 kills. Abby Weaver also had double-digits with 11 kills on the night. Kayla Green and Elyse Shaw combined for 50 assists, as each of the setters had 25 assists each. Morgan Rupp tied her career best with another 25 digs performance. Erin McCallum set a new career high with nine digs. Sanders, Green, and Shaw each posted another double-double to add to their season totals. ETBU hit .209 as a team in the contest.

ETBU returns to action this Friday against Texas Lutheran at 2:00 p.m. ETBU will then turn around on Saturday and face-off against Birmingham Southern College in the regular season finale. This will be the final action before the ASC tournament starts next week, November 3rd-5th, on the campus of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
