#TIGERSWIN: Tigers Hold Off Rally

LONGVIEW, Texas - Holding off a late Schreiner rally, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team pulled out a clutch 67-64 victory over Schreiner in the second day of LETU Classic. With their first win of the season, ETBU ends the first half of the season at 1-10 overall.

ETBU had two players in double-figures as Hannah Holt had 13 points and five rebounds. Brittney Jones collected 11 points and a team-leading three assists. Sade Murrell (nine rebounds) and Amanda Wilson (four rebounds, two blocks) each had eight points each. As a team, ETBU made 44.2% from the field and 66.7% from the free-throw line. Defensively, ETBU colected 32 defensive rebounds and blocked seven shots.

For SU, Codi Simmons tallied 18 points and grabbed five rebounds while Jordyn Villa tallied 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out three assists. As a team, SU made 31.3% from the field, 14.3% from three-point range, and 65.5% from the free-throw line.

In the first quarter, ETBU started strong with a 6-2 edge with buckets by Malaisia Chisholm and Delia Hopkins. Schreiner then ran a 6-0 run to take the lead at 8-6. But ETBU used a 7-2 run to end the quarter up three at 13-10 courtesy of Holt and a three by Kaitlyn Packett. The second quarter saw ETBU rush to a six point lead at 21-15. In the stretch, Jhanniece Raspberry nailed a jumper and Wilson hit two free throws to give ETBU the lead. Schreiner though would charge back and go on a 13-3 run to end the first half with the Mountaineers leading 28-24.

SU would jump out to a 32-25 lead at the 6:43 in the third when ETBU fought back. Murrell, Holt, and Jones led the way as ETBU would tie the score at 37. An and-one by Lauren Lee gave ETBU the lead for good as ETBU would have the lead at 44-39 with one quarter to play. In the 4th quarter, ETBU suddenly caught fire as they jumped out to a 15-5 run on Schreiner giving them a 59-44 lead with 4:28 to play. Contributions came from Wilson who blocked two shots and free throws by Hopkins and Jade Jefferies. The Mountaineers would cut the lead to ten at 61-51 before ETBU would add points to make the score 64-51 with forty-nine seconds to play.

SU would make one last charge as they scored ten straight points to cut the lead to three with eighteen seconds left. Lee however would score a huge clutch basket to give ETBU a five point lead with nine seconds to play. SU would make it a one-possession game on a three-point play before Holt made one free throw to give ETBU a 67-64 lead. The Tigers held on for the last three seconds to secure the victory.


ETBU will return home this week with a Thursday night game against Rust College. Tip off starts at 5:00 pm at Ornelas.
