MARSHALL, Texas – The East Texas Baptist University men's tennis team prevailed over visiting LeTourneau University, 7-2, on Saturday morning at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Complex. Resuming a suspended match that had begun on April 1, the teams jumped back into the doubles flights with the match score at 0-0.
With the victory in its regular-season finale, ETBU improves to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in American Southwest Conference East Division competition.
In the doubles matches, the teams battled in each flight with ETBU claiming a 2-1 advantage. Dillon Deatherage and Ryan Pearce were 8-4 winners in the second-seeded match, while Rollin Houk and Connor Mason emerged victorious, 8-6, in the No. 3 flight. LeTourneau earned its lone doubles point as its No. 1 doubles team topped ETBU's Cody Highsmith and Tyler Tolopka by an 8-4 margin.
The match then moved into the singles competition, and more tight matches followed as two flights went to three sets. Tolopka claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win in the top-seeded match, while Pearce won his fifth-seeded match by an identical 6-2, 6-2 margin. Mason was a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 winner in the No. 2 flight, and Deatherage recovered from an opening-set loss to claim a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 victory in the third-seeded match. Additionally, Highsmith earned a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 4.
ETBU waits for the announcement of its opponent for the ASC Championship Tournament, which will begin on April 28.
