#TIGERSWIN: ETBU Scores 85 Points in Rout

MARSHALL, Texas – Playing for two of their brothers that passed away in the spring, the East Texas Baptist University football team continued showing their a team deal with scoring 85 points in the win over Southwestern Assemblies of God. ETBU broke three team records in most points scored, total offense (912 yards), and the team passing record (515 yards). With the 85-23 victory, ETBU moved to 2-0 on the year.

"I thought the home atmosphere here tonight was amazing and I just want to thank everyone that took part in this night from the guys that painted and got the field ready to the Grid Iron Club at Tiger Alley and there is many more I could thank. I am just blessed that I work for a place that understands the 'GameDay' atmosphere," says head coach Scotty Walden.

ETBU's offense netted 912 yards of total offense surpassing the 715 yards set in 2014 and broke the scoreboard with 85 points. Nine different players scored on the night led by Jourdan McNeill's three rushing touchdowns. Both Chase Sojka and Richard Johnson had two receiving touchdowns each and Dru Smith threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns. Tarek Beagard also threw for two touchdowns.

Overall, McNeill had another stellar night at running back as he recorded 159 yards rushing  on 16 carries. Sojka added 184 yards receiving while Johnson had 102 yards on three receptions.

The defensive shut out SAGU in the second half after allowing 23 points in the first half. They recorded five sacks, two forced fumbles, and 16 tackles for loss. Ty Parsons and Zack Biles each had nine tackles.

The scoring happened quickly for ETBU as they put 29 points up in the first quarter scoring on their first four possessions. In the third quarter, ETBU recorded five touchdowns on five possessions.

Johnson received the first two scores of the night on 48-yard and 46-yard touchdown passes from Smith. Sojka had a nine-yard touchdown reception with 8:23 left in the first for a 22-7 lead. Dominic Haggerty made it 29-14 on an 11-yard run and then McNeill finished off the second quarter with runs from 30-yards and 69-yards for a 44-23 halftime lead.

It was an exciting third quarter as ETBU added 34 more points to run away with the game. Jacques Kuykendall ended up with a touchdown after he picked up fumble and ran it in. At the 11:01 mark, McNeill added his third touchdown of the game for a 57-23 lead. Sojka then caught a 77-yard pass with 7:30 remaining in third making it 64-23. Dionte Johnson, Haggerty, and Chris Respass added three more touchdowns making it 85-23.

ETBU will host Southwestern University next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in non-conferrence play.
