Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – In front of a fired up crowd at Ornelas Gymnasium, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team swept the University of Texas-Tyler Patriots in three straights by scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 28-26. For head coach Keely Peterson, it was her first home win in the gym as well as the team's first conference win.
Leading the way for the team was Kayla Green, who posted a double double with 21 assists and 12 digs while Mallory Sanders had 10 kills and nine digs. Morgan Rupp also contributed with 13 digs while Elyse Shaw had eight assists. ETBU hit .146 with 12 kills in set one, .083 with 10 kills in set two, and .405 with 18 kills in set three to pull out the win.
In the first set, ETBU and UTT would exchange points for the first part of the match as ETBU never gave up the lead. It was 11-10 when ETBU would go on a 7-3 run to make it 18-13. Following a kill by Shaw and a service error, the score was 22-16 in ETBU's favor. The Patriots would fight back to make it a 23-22 deficit. Kills by Bailey Byas and Sanders sealed the first set for ETBU.
It was the same story early in set two as ETBU and UTT would trade points with UTT grabbing their first lead of the match at 3-2. ETBU would then go on a 5-2 run to make it 7-5 only to allow a 5-1 UTT run take place for a 10-8 lead. The momentum would then change in ETBU's favor as a 4-0 run keyed by service aces by Green gave ETBU a lead they would never relinquish at 12-10. The floodwaters opened as ETBU jumped to a 19-11 lead. UTT did manage to cut the lead to five, but ETBU closed the set out with a 25-18 win.
Again, the third set saw the two teams exchange points. But this time, UTT would take a 7-4 lead. ETBU answered with a 7-2 run that gave them a 11-9 lead. They would continue to add to their lead up to five points at 17-12. UTT would not back down as they manage to tie the score at 19-19. A 5-1 run by ETBU would put them at match point. The Patriots once again showed their resolve as they tied the score at 24, meaning ETBU needed to win by two. ETBU and UTT would trade points on the next two possessions. UTT would take a 26-25 lead and were at set point. But ETBU rallied to grab the next three points to win 28-26.
ETBU will return to action on September 23, 2016 as they take part in the Concordia Crossover starting at 2:30 vs. McMurry.
