Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – For the second time in as many matches in the season, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team tied a double overtime match with Texas Lutheran University, 1-1. ETBU tied Schreiner on Thursday, 0-0, in the first match of the year.
The match ended in a 1-1 tie as senior Alexis Smith netted ETBU's first goal of the season. Lexy Montgomery got the start in the net as she played all 110 minutes for the second straight game. She had five saves on the day out of 16 shots by TLU.
ETBU hit the scoreboard first on a free kick from sophomore Megan Friend. Friend sent a ball into the box and Smith finished the set piece with a header to give ETBU the early edge in the contest. ETBU led TLU for most of the second half until a late goal by Jessica Coronado evened up the scoring in the 87th minute.
Coach Erik Solberg was pleased with the effort of the team and the “extra minutes” the girls experienced again today, “I was really proud of their resilience, I felt like really created a lot more chances. I felt like we were the better team for most of the match. We have to minimize some momentary lapses and mistakes, but I thought the girls fought hard for each other.”
Smith led the team with two shots out of the nine for ETBU. “We have had two tough opponents and have played 110 minutes in two games now. It has been a lot on the team but we haven't backed down. I think we can be competitive in any league we play in and I think we will pick up some W's soon.”
ETBU will be on the road next weekend as the head to Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Thursday and Dallas Christian College on Saturday in nonconference action.
