Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – Despite a come-from-behind effort in the 4th quarter, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team was unable to complete the comeback as they dropped an 81-72 decision to Louisiana College in American Southwest Conference East Division play. ETBU falls to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the ASC East.
LC jumped out to a strong start at 11-2 and led 14-4 with under five in first half. ETBU would charge right back to cut the lead to 18-15 by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter would see LC adding points to their lead, while ETBU would cut the lead to as close as two points at 23-21. That was when LC took off and they would up their lead to as large as thirteen at 38-27. ETBU did cut into the lead to 38-30 before LC finished with a halftime lead of 44-32.
LC's momentum continued in the third quarter as they would build their lead up to 23 points at 63-40 with 2:56 left in the third quarter. ETBU would climb back into the game as they trailed 66-49 after three quarters. With 8:55 left in the fourth quarter, LC's Karlee Teddlie drilled a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a lead of 72-52. It would be the last field goal LC would make all game as ETBU would suddenly catch fire.
Brilliant efforts by Kendle Kossie on defense, plus a few three's by Delia Hopkins, would give ETBU some hope as Hannah Holt would help lead the charge. ETBU would cut the lead as close as five points at 72-67 on a Brittney Jones layup. LC would sink their first free throw in over eight minutes. ETBU could not hit the shots needed to catch up and LC's free throws iced the win for the Wildcats.
ETBU had two players in double figures as Holt led all scorers with 23 points and five assists, while Amanda Wilson had 13 points. For LC, Teddlie had 22 points while Taylor Payne had 18 points and Rometta Lombard collected 12 of her own.
Both teams shot 42% from the field for the game. But LC had the edge in three-pointers (35%-29%) and free throws (70%-65%) made in the game. Although ETBU turned the ball over more times than LC, they did take advantage of LC's turnovers by scoring 28 points to LC's 27 and out-rebounded the Wildcats 42-37.
ETBU hits the road next game to Belton, Texas where they will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor. Tipoff starts at 5:30 PM for an American Southwest Conference showdown.
