CLARKSVILLE, Ark.- Finishing up another American Southwest Conference match on the road, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team traveled to the Hurie Soccer Field in Clarksville, Ark. for a showdown against The University of the Ozarks. Goals scored by
Jordan Burke and
Max Ponticorvo forced double-overtime but neither team was able to muster another score, resulting in a 2-2 tie for both teams. ETBU is now 4-7-2 overall and goes to 0-6-1 in ASC matches.
ETBU managed the first goal of the match at the 8:27 mark of the first half. The assist by Landon Malone set up the scoring opportunity for Burke, giving the Tigers their first lead of the contest at 1-0. The Ozarks would go 33 minutes without a response until a goal by Miguel Reyes tied the game at 1-1 heading into halftime. Both teams failed to score a goal over the next four minutes and the half ended at a tie 1-1.
The Ozarks tacked on another goal at the 75:30 mark of the second half, taking the lead at 2-1. ETBU countered nine minutes later with a goal by Ponticorvo in the 87
th minute to tie the game at two goals apiece just before time expired. Regulation ended all even at 2-2, and both teams would gear up for extra time on the field.
The first 10 minutes of overtime ended with a tie. ETBU had a chance for the win in the 93
rd minute whine Sam Arellano headed a shot but it was stopped by Valestin. The second overtime session yielded the same result, leading to the 2-2 stalemate between both teams. Arellano had a look for the win in the 110
th minute but it was stopped once again by Valestin.
The Tigers outshot the Eagles 17-9, including eight shots right at the net. ETBU also chipped in four saves in the match by
Bryant Botello.
The Tigers will next matchup with Louisiana College at home on Thursday, Oct. 19. Â
