PINEVILLE, La.- Dominating from start to finish, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team used a balanced effort across the board to defeat the Louisiana Wildcats on the road, 3-0. With their third straight victory, the Tigers improve to 11-16 overall and 7-7 in American Southwest Conference matches this season.
LC jumped out early on ETBU, delivering three consecutive points to take the early 3-0 lead in the opening set. A service error and a kill by
Paige Miller brought the Tigers to within one, at 3-2 after the next two exchanges. LC responded with three unanswered points to take the 6-2 advantage. But ETBU responded with four straight points of their own, capped off by a vicious kill by
Allison Sevening to put her team on top 7-6. Several miscues by the home team put them behind by six, which was capitalized by a kill by
Abby Weaver to bring the score to 16-10. ETBU outscored the Wildcats 9-3 down the stretch to close out the first set with a 25-13 win.
Set two started with a 1-1 tie, but eventually the dominance of the Tigers would overwhelm LC, as they suffered another loss 25-12, putting ETBU in the driver's seat with a 2-0 lead.
Set three proved more of the same for the Wildcats, as the Tigers used kills by
Sydney Lopez and
Alexis Contos to finish off LC 25-12 for the series sweep.
Miller turned in a terrific outing once again for ETBU with 13 kills.
Bailey Byas was second on the team with seven kills and two blocks on the night.
Elyse Shaw dished out 23 assists and
Karina Lay led the way in digs, recording 10 in the sweep.
ETBU will close out the three-game road trip with a visit to Jackson, MS, where they will look to take revenge on the Belhaven Blazers, after suffering an earlier 3-2 loss in Ornelas Gym. The match is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21.Â
