MARSHALL, Texas – In a tightly contested game, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team secured the American Southwest Conference win by taking a 2-1 decision over Louisiana College. This puts ETBU at 5-7-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the ASC.
Early in the contest, each team would have chances to score. LC had a chance to strike first but the shot was saved by ETBU keeper
Bryant Botello off his fingertips. At the 24
th minute,
Max Ponticorvo's corner kick was capitalized by
Michael Andrews on a header and the Tigers led 1-0 for the rest of the first half.
In the second half, both Botello and LC's goalkeeper Nathan Gautreaux made brilliant saves to keep the game locked at 1-0. But it wouldn't stay that way for long as Francisco Silvestre equalized from 30 yards off the crossbar tying up the game just 27 minutes into the second half. Both teams struggled to get the go-ahead goal as each team had good chances to score. However, it was an own goal by LC that proved to be the difference in 82
nd minute. Desperate, LC upped the pressure to try and equalize but ETBU's defense would not let them tie it up as the Tigers hung on for the 2-1 win.
Dominic Wood (two shots on goal) and
Jordan Burke each led the team with two shots each. Botello made six saves overall. For LC, Trevon Michael (three shots on goal) and Silvestre each had three shots. In goal, Gautreaux made two saves for the Wildcats.
ETBU plays Belhaven this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. It will also be senior day for the Tigers as four seniors will be honored.
