JACKSON, Miss.- Seeking revenge from an early season loss, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team used a combined 25 kills from
Paige Miller and
Abby Weaver to come away with the 3-0 sweep over Belhaven University on Saturday afternoon. With the weekend victory, ETBU is now 12-16 overall and 8-7 in American Southwest Conference matches this season.
The first set saw BU get on the board taking an early 1-0 lead. A kill by
Natalie Coburn sparked a run of five consecutive points by the Tigers to go on top 5-1. With ETBU leading 6-3, back-to-back kills by Miller and Weaver put the Tigers up 8-3. ETBU went up by as many as 10 points down the stretch, at 22-12. The Blazers narrowed the gap to seven, 24-17, but a costly error gave the Tigers the 25-17 set win.
Set two saw ETBU in full attack mode during the opening exchanges. A set up by
Meredith Augsburger led to another kill by Miller to put the Tigers up 6-2. BU tried to stay within striking distance for much of the set but a
Bailey Byas kill sealed their fate, ending in a 25-19 set two victory for ETBU.
The score was all knotted at 2-2 to start the third set but that's as close as the set would get as Augsburger connected with Coburn to finish off the Blazers with a kill, taking the 25-13 victory and the sweep.
Miller turned in her third straight spectacular performance, recording 14 kills and 17 digs in the win. Weaver added 11 kills, while Augsburger dished out 21 assists and collected 10 digs in the Tigers' fourth straight win.
ETBU will return home for the final match of the regular season as they gear up to take on Texas Tyler on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7:00 p.m.
