ALPINE, Texas – Making history by guaranteeing a third straight winning season, East Texas Baptist University played a balanced game in their 42-28 victory over Sul Ross State University. Sitting at 6-2 with two games left, the third straight winning season has never been done before in the program. ETBU is also 5-2 in the American Southwest Conference.
It was also a day to tie or break individual records, too.
Ty Parsons and
Richard Johnson both put their names in the record book. Parsons recorded 15 tackles which gives him 123 total tackles to surpass Greg Washington's 122 tackles set in 2003. Johnson tied his own record from last year for receiving touchdowns in a season at 13.
ETBU once again piled up the offense with 534 yards of total offense.
Brian Baca went 22-of-41 for 369 yards and five touchdowns.
Richard Johnson led the offensive attack with 130 yards receiving on four receptions.
Terance Hargest was the leading rusher with 78 yards. Defensively, Parsons and
Caleb Taylor led the defense with 15 and 12 tackles. The defense also forced four turnovers with three of them coming on interceptions. Taylor recorded on interception while
Ben Ashton grabbed two.
Opening up the game driving down to the 23-yard line, ETBU missed a 41-yard field goal turning the ball over to Sul Ross State. The Lobos then drove down to the 25-yard line where the defense stuffed a 4
th-and-one to turn the ball back over to ETBU. One play later, ETBU went up 7-0 (9:40). Baca went 75-yards to Johnson on the first play of the drive to give ETBU their first score and first of five touchdown passes on the day. Sul Ross State responded, too, with a 71-yard drive to tie the game at the 6:56 mark. That was the only scoring done in the first quarter.
When it looked like ETBU would go up 21-7 in the second quarter, the ball was fumbled in the end zone at the 12:15 mark as Sul Ross State took the ball back. A drive later by ETBU, Johnson caught a five-yard pass with 7:44 left for the seven-point lead. That drive went 65-yards on five plays but only took 1:16 off the clock as it was the only score of the quarter.
In the second half, ETBU's offense woke up adding 28 points on the score board with 14 points in each quarter. Starting in the third quarter, Sul Ross State tied the game at 14 at the 8:23. They had a 29-yard receiving touchdown to Steven Savedra to make the game interesting. Four minutes later, ETBU responded when
Austin Morriel collected his first collegiate touchdown on a two-yard run for the seven-point lead, 21-14 (6:14).
Tarek Beaugard caught a nine-yard pass from Baca at the 2:43 mark pushing the lead to 14, 28-14. It only took 43 seconds for Sul Ross State to cut the lead back to seven when James Davis broke free for a 71-yard run (2:00), 28-21.
Johnson caught his third touchdown of the game with 8:54 left from three-yards out to give ETBU another 14-point lead, 35-21. Sul Ross State didn't go away as they took the ensuing kickoff and drove 79 yards to pull within seven points, 35-28. Davis rushed in from six-yards to put his team in a position to tie the game (4:17). ETBU, though, flexed their offensive muscle, again, with a four-play 65-yard drive ending on a 35-yard touchdown pass to
Xavier Gray. That pushed ETBU's lead to two scores, 42-28. Sul Ross State battled back and drove down to ETBU's 15-yard line where Ashton picked off his second ball of the day in the end zone to end the Lobos threat with 1:05 left in the game. ETBU then ran out the clock for the victory.
ETBU will host McMurry University on November 4 in the final home game of the year at 2:00 p.m.
