MARSHALL, Texas – Fighting through rain, cold, and 110 minutes of soccer, the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer season ended in a shootout as the University of Texas-Tyler (#5 seed) advanced on in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. The match will go down as a 2-2 tie but due to post season rules a shootout determines who advances on. ETBU (#4 seed) finishes the year with 13 wins tying the most in program history and hosted a post season match for the first time since 2005.

"It's a tough way for the season to end, but I'm so proud of the way we played tonight and all season," says head coach Erik Solberg. "This team, and especially our senior class, have left an incredible legacy and changed the trajectory of our program. I'm so thankful to have had the chance to coach them, and wish it could have ended differently, but soccer is a cruel game sometimes."

It didn't take much time for the Tigers to get on the board, with Ashleigh Rondon streaking over to the left side of the net and sinking the goal off the assist by Abbey Sturdivant in the sixth minute. ETBU would increase the lead to 2-0 when Hannah Murin advanced the ball to Raegan Kappler to score her second goal of the season from just outside the box at the 27:01 mark. ETBU would then go into the locker room with the 2-0 advantage. They outshot the Patriots in the first half, attempting nine total shots to UTT's four.

The momentum took a turn to UTT in the second half, with Ashleigh Ackroyd sinking in the first goal for off an assist by Vanessa Rangel at the 48:01 mark of the game, putting the score at 2-1. It took 34 minutes for the Patriots to answer once again, as Mariah Harmon converted a corner kick opportunity with a header for the team's second goal of the match to even the score at 2-2 (82nd minute)

Neither team was able to find the net over the next eight minutes as they were headed to overtime. A big save by Claire Montondon at the 89:11 point of the match kept UTT from stealing a victory in regulation.

Within the first minute of overtime, Montondon continued to rack up tremendous defensive plays, saving two potential go-ahead shots by the Patriots. With neither team being able to break the tie, both teams entered yet another overtime period. The second ten minutes yielded the same result, leading to the eventual shootout.

Despite a valiant effort by the Tigers, the Patriots prevailed in the shootout 4-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the ASC Tournament. UTT hit made their first four shots while ETBU connected on the first kick but then missed the second and third attempts.

UTT out shot ETBU, 28-14, with 18 shots coming right at the net. The Tigers led the defensive effort with 16 save to UTT's six on the night.

Rondon and Kappler led the scoring effort for the Tigers with a goal each. Montondon manned the defense, collecting a career-best 16 saves in the match.

ETBU finishes the season at 13-5-2 and is currently ranked 10th regionally in the USC West Region Poll. ETBU also had a seven-match winning streak at the end of the season.
