MARSHALL, Texas – In the final home game of the year, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team couldn't keep with the top team in the American Southwest Conference East Division dropping the game, 66-49, to the University of Texas at Dallas. ETBU honored two seniors on the day in the final home game in Delia Hopkins and Kaitlyn Packett
UTD started off on a 4-0 run before ETBU answered with their first and only lead of the game as baskets by Sade Murrell and a three-point play by Holt gave ETBU a 5-4 lead. UTD answered with an 8-0 run before ETBU scored their next basket. The Comets finished the first quarter with a 17-6 run to lead 21-11. UTD would build their lead to 23 on a few occasions throughout the second quarter. Though ETBU would cut it down to 18, UTD would make it a twenty point lead at 44-24 by halftime.
The third quarter was a defensive struggle for both teams as they scored nine points each and the Comets led 53-33 at the third quarter. ETBU did cut the lead to eighteen before the Comets made it 20-point lead early in the fouth. Throughout the fourth quarter, UTD flirted with keeping a twenty point lead for before ETBU would outscore them 16-13 to finish the game 66-49.
The freshmen tandem of Hannah Holt and Brittney Jones led the way with 18 and 13 points respectively. Holt also tied for the team lead in rebounds with five. ETBU shot the ball 33% from the field, 15% from the three-point line, and 50% from the free-throw line. UTD had three players in double figures as Alyssa Crockett had 19 points while Kayla Reinhart collected 15 points. Katie Gunther finished with 10 points. UTD made 42% from the field, 31% from the three-point line, and 75% from the free-throw stripes.
ETBU will travel to Jackson, Mississippi, for their final game of the season against Belhaven. Tip off starts at 5:30 p.m.
