MARSHALL, Texas – Following a tremendous opening 59-17 road win over the Southwest Assemblies of God, the East Texas Baptist University football team begins the first of nine straight American Southwest Conference games with a road trip to Georgetown, Texas, to take on new ASC opponent Southwestern University. This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams.
ETBU opened up the season last week and jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter never looking back over SAGU.
Dru Smith led the offense with 265 passing yards and four touchdowns while going 14-of-24.
Brian Baca also added 106 yards passing. Wide receivers
Richard Johnson (69 yards receiving) and Xavier Grey (110 yards) each had two touchdown receptions. In the ground game,
Jeremiah Robertson recorded three rushing touchdowns on eight carries while
Dominic Haggerty had 61 yards on 10 rushes.
Defensively,
Ty Parsons led the team with 19 total tackles including nine solo and 10 assisted. For his performance, he was named the ASC Defensive Player of the Week. ETBU forced four turnovers including interceptions by
Anton Clark,
Dylan Bowman and
Hardy Hill. Special teams also came through as
Ryan Travis was a perfect eight-of-eight or extra points and one field goal while
Kentavious Miller returned a punt for 72 yards for a touchdown in his first collegiate game. Miller was named ASC Special Teams Player of the Week.
ETBU is facing Southwestern for the fifth time and the first in the ASC. ETBU is 4-0 against the Pirates as last season was the closest contest. ETBU took the game in Marshall, 33-23, improving to 3-0 on the season as
Day'Lonzo Freeman rushed for 151 yards on 11 carries while Smith passed for 203 yards and three touchdowns.
Caleb Taylor led ETBU's defense with 15 tackles. ETBU is 5-2 all-time against the Pirates.
SU (1-1) is coming off a 56-12 win over McMurry. After two games, they are averaging 43.5 ppg while giving up 30.5. The Pirates have demonstrated a run-first approach as they average 365 yards per game while throwing for 175.5 yards per game. Overall, the offense is averaging 540.5 yards per game while the defense gives up 400 yards.

Scott Highsmith knows that Southwestern is going to be a difficult match and expects a tightly-fought game.
ETBU's offense is one of the tops in the nation, again, after one game scoring 59 points. Last year, ETBU led all NCAA Divisions in scoring per game.
