Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. – Heading back to Marshall, Texas, winning three overall matches on the weekend, the East Texas Baptist University volleyball team split their matches on day two at Millsaps College. ETBU lost a heartbreaker to Rhodes College in five sets to start the day but then bounced back for a four-set win over LaGrange College.
In the first match of the day, ETBU jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Rhodes before falling in the next three. In set one, ETBU won 25-23 after Rhodes pulled within one, 23-22. ETBU then had a great set two with a 25-16 win. A slow start in set three, down 7-2, ended in 25-15 loss. ETBU was tied with Rhodes in set for at ten all but a 6-1 run by the Lynx was too much for the Tigers. ETBU fell, 25-16, as the fifth set was set up. Rhodes jumped out on ETBU in the final set, 5-2, and then pushed their lead to 11-6, before winning, 15-8, handing ETBU their first loss of the year.
ETBU bounced back for a four-set win to end the invitational defeating LaGrange. ETBU started set one with a 7-4 lead. They moved the lead to 17-12 before winning 25-17. Again, ETBU took a four-point lead in set two, 8-4, and went on a 12-7 run for a 20-11 lead.
Bailey Byas then ended set two with a kill for the 25-13 win. LaGrange then pulled out set three, 25-23, but ETBU started set four on a 6-2 run. The set was then tied at 14, 19, and 21 but ETBU scored three straight for a 24-21 lead. LaGrange scored the next two points before ETBU took the match, 25-23.
ETBU will host Centenary College on Tuesday in the home opener at 7:00 p.m.
