MARSHALL, Texas – An all-around team effort by East Texas Baptist University led to a sweep of Louisiana College in American Southwest Conference volleyball play as the Tigers returned home to Ornelas Gym. ETBU took a 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-19) win over LC in their first meeting ever moving to 7-11 on the year and 3-3 in the ASC East.
"It was a really great team win and we came together to play our level of volleyball. We saw what was open and were able to hit where they weren't tonight," says
Allison Sevening.
ETBU was led by Sevening's 10 kills as she hit .259 overall.
Paige Miller added nine kills,
Bailey Byas eight kills and
Abby Weaver seven kills.
Elyse Shaw finished with 25 assists while
Gabrielle Guy posted 14 digs. LC's Sadi Jones led her team with 10 kills. Overall, ETBU hit .274 and had 54 digs and 40 assists. Their defense held LC to just a .078 hitting percentage.
The first 12 points of the first set were close as ETBU had only a two-point lead, 7-5. LC cut the lead to one, 6-5, on a kill but then ETBU went on a 19-4 run to take the set, 25-9. At one point, ETBU scored seven straight points to make it 16-6. Five of those points were on kills from Weaver, Sevening, and Byas.
Set two mimicked the first set as it was tied at five all before ETBU went on an 8-2 run for a 13-7 lead. Miller started the run on a service ace and Sevening's kill put ETBU on top, 13-7. LC came within four, 14-10, only to see ETBU go on a 7-2 run making it 21-12. ETBU then scored four of the next eight points to go up, 2-0.
LC made ETBU earn the win in set three jumping out to a 10-5 lead. ETBU responded, though, on a 15-4 run to move ahead 20-14. The run started with five straight points to tie it at 10. Four straight errors on LC and a kill by Weaver tied it up. There were then four ties with the last at 14 as an ETBU 6-0 run put them up 20-14. Five straight kills (Sevening, Miller, Weaver) and an
Emily Anderson service ace were the six points. LC couldn't recover as ETBU took the match win, 25-18.
ETBU will now host Belhaven University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in another ASC East match.
