MARSHALL, Texas – Rattling off three goals with two in the first half and dealing with a lightening delay, the East Texas University men's soccer team shutout Hendrix College for the first win of the year. The team now sits at 1-1-1 on the year.
ETBU was aggressive on both sides of the ball, scoring its first goal at the 14:49 mark of the first period. Senior
Jordan Burke managed his first goal of the season after breaking free of several defenders near the goal line.
The Tigers responded with another goal from the 30-yard line by freshman
Tristan Gonzales over the next three minutes to take the commanding 2-0 lead into intermission.
It was a stalemate in the second half of play, as both teams grinded back and forth across the field.
The Tigers would not connect on its final bucket of the contest until
Daniel Rutter scored his second goal of the season in the waning moments of the contest off of the assist by
Joel Botello.
The men's team came away with its first victory of the season behind stellar play across the field. The Tigers outshot Hendrix College seven to four overall with six of those shots coming on goal.
Bryant Botello had two saves on the night. After all the delays, ETBU earned their win a hair after midnight on Wednesday morning.
The blue and gold will travel to Shreveport, La., to take on Centenary College on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
