MARSHALL, Texas- Ending the year winning nine of the first 10 games, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team will head west to take on three American Southwest Conference opponents this week. The team will first matchup with Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday, Jan. 4. ETBU will next take on McMurry University on Saturday, Jan. 6. The Tigers will close out the three-game road trip with a contest against Howard Payne University on Monday, Jan. 8. ETBU enters the New Year with a record of 9-1 overall and are a perfect 3-0 in ASC games this season.
ETBU is looking to avenge a loss to HSU last season, 78-57. The Cowgirls enter Thursday's matchup with a 3-8 overall record, with their last victory coming against Belhaven College 67-65 in overtime. HSU is led by Dani Mabry, averaging 13.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
Going into Saturday's contest against McMurry University, the Warhawks are 6-5 overall and 4-1 in ASC matchups this season. ETBU will be looking to bounce back from last year's 84-78 loss to MCM last season. MCM's last victory came against Texas-Lutheran, 58-42 on Dec. 15. Leading the charge for the Warhawks is Skyler Reyna, who is averaging 13.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season.
Ending the road trip with a matchup against Howard Payne University, HPU comes into Monday's meeting at 7-5 overall and 3-1 in ASC play. HSU last defeated Whitworth University 78-75 on Dec. 18. Valarie Matlock leads the Yellow Jackets with 12.4 points on 57 percent shooting from the field.
Kim Childress continues to lead the Tigers on the offensive end, averaging 15.2 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Katy Boren sits at second place, with 7.8 points. Boren also leads ETBU in three point field goals made, connecting on 22-of-56 for the season.
Karley McHenry rounds out the team's top three scorers, averaging 7.7 points per game for the Tigers. McHenry has also knocked down 17-of-39 shots from beyond the arc for a 43.6 percent clip overall.
Baylie Lindsey continues to man the defensive effort, with 2.2 steals per game.
Madison McCoy paces ETBU averaging 5.3 assists per game.
