PREVIEW: @ETBU_Football Facing Off Against TLU in ASC Play

MARSHALL, Texas – After picking up an impressive victory over Howard Payne University, the East Texas Baptist University football team heads out to Seguin, Texas, to battle with Texas Lutheran on Saturday for their first day game this season. This will mark the third straight season the Tigers have battled with TLU seeking to rebound from a tough 41-34 loss in last season's game in Marshall.

In their last home game, ETBU used 676 total yards to score 54 points while allowing 28 from Howard Payne on Tackle Cancer Night. ETBU was led offensively by Brian Baca (14-of-26) who threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for two scores as well. This performance would garner his third career ASC Offensive Player of the Week performance. Richard Johnson (four receptions, 87 yards) also had a big achievement as he would collect his 34th career touchdown reception breaking the previous mark of 33 held by Tyler Bates. Justin Ward had 104-yards while Dominic Haggerty added a touchdown on 99 yards rushing. Meanwhile, ETBU's defense was led by 14 tackles from Garrett Gibson and 10 from Quaylon Beckley while Zack Walker picked up a sack-and-a-half and Malik Mason intercepted a pass.

Baca continues to lead the offense with 1,559 passing yards and 13 touchdowns on 78 completions averaging 311.8 yards per game. Richard Johnson remains ETBU's top receiver with 460 receiving yards on 23 receptions and five touchdowns while Tarek Beaugard has caught 311 yards on nine receptions for four touchdowns. The ground game is led by Haggerty, who has 273 rushing yards while Jeremiah Robertson leads with three rushing touchdowns. Gibson remains ETBU's leader in tackles with 48 while both Walker and Khamron Thomas have three sacks each. Zack Biles is still ETBU's leader in interceptions with two.

ETBU is currently 3-2 and 3-1 in the American Southwest Conference. This season, they are 1-1 on the road. Last time ETBU went to Seguin in 2016 they upset then #21 TLU 44-20 in the first game of the season. With a 41-36 win against Louisiana College in Pineville, La., the Bulldogs are 4-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Quarterback Kyle Grona leads the offense with 540 passing yards and five touchdowns. Running back Chris Monroe has 532 yards on 7.2 yards per carry and four rushing touchdowns while both CJ Romero (140 yards) and Pearce Loth (160 yards) have two touchdowns each. Charles Robinson has caught 20 receptions for a team-leading 257 yards while scoring a touchdown of his own. On defense, Emory Cuzze is the team leader with 34 tackles while Manny Longoria has seven sacks and James Ball has picked off four passes.

Expecting this game to be a great matchup for the conference, head coach Brian Mayper talks about facing Texas Lutheran. "They're gunning for the conference championship. They lost once to Mary Hardin-Baylor so they are sitting in the same spot as us with one loss. They're hungry right now. It's the same for us too. It should be a great game and one of the better games in the conference this week," says Mayper.

Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Bulldog Stadium.
