PREVIEW: @ETBU_Soccer Heads East for ASC Play

MARSHALL, Texas – After another cancellation due to weather, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team returns to action this weekend on the road for two American Southwest Conference games. ETBU heads out of state to play Belhaven University on Thursday in Mississippi and Louisiana College on Saturday.

In the previous match, ETBU hosted the University of Ozarks at Cornish Field last Thursday. Despite playing two overtime sessions, ETBU ultimately came away with a 3-3 tie. Samuel Arellano, Juan Cairo, and Daniel Rutter each piled a goal for the Tigers in the match with Silas Sangano contributing on two assists.  ETBU was then scheduled to take on the University of Texas Tyler only to have the match canceled due to severe weather.
The tie against UO puts at ETBU 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the ASC. ETBU finds themselves one spot outside the conference tournament picture as they trail LC by a single point with only four conference matches to go.

Rutter is now ETBU's leader in goals with four while tied with Sangano, who is tied with Arellano with two assists, in points with eight. Sangano also maintains a shots lead with 25 on the season. Goalkeeper Bryant Botello collects 51 saves while posting a 1.36 goals against average stat.

This week, ETBU heads to Jackson, Miss., on Thursday. Last season saw the Tigers battle the Blazers to a 0-0 draw at home. With the tie, ETBU is now 3-3-2 all-time in their head-to-head meetings. This season, BU is currently 4-8-2 and 2-6 in the ASC following a 4-2 loss to Sul Ross State. Alex Hale has been BU's top scorer with 10 goals while LaLesh Hadji and Nathan Ratzlaff have two assists each. Thomas Blake made 59 days while allowing a GAA of 1.82.

ETBU will then travel to Louisiana on Saturday when they travel to Pineville to face the Wildcats. Last season, ETBU upped their head-to-head record with LC to 20-2 by picking up a 2-1 win. At 4-9-1 overall, and 3-5-0 in the ASC, LC is coming off a 4-3 win over Sul Ross State. With four goals apiece, both Jason Rodriguez and Gabriel Lopes lead LC while Leo Urumovski has four assists for the lead in that category. In goal, Evan Barker has allowed a GAA of 2.71 while making 66 saves.

These upcoming games will be a proven test to see if the Tigers can get themselves back within the conference tournament picture. Yet, as head coach Chris Crawford states, ETBU will need to find a way to dig down deep to control the things they can control in order to win.

"The main thing is just us staying true to ourselves," said Coach Crawford. "It doesn't matter what the other team does. It doesn't matter what the officials do or what field we play on. We have to play our game. I think this team is dangerous enough. We've shown that every day. We've made some mistakes but we're a dangerous team."

ETBU kicks off at 7:30 PM on Thursday in Mississippi and 2:30 PM on Saturday.
