BOSSIER CITY, Louisiana –Propelled by two clutch goals in the final thirteen minutes of play, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team upset #25 the University of Texas Dallas, who is the top program the American Southwest Conference, 2-1. It is UTD's first ASC loss of the year as ETBU moves to 8-5-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the ASC.
It was the second half where the momentum changed.
Max Ponticorvo's corner kick turned into a pass to Atkinson, who headed his first goal of the season to equalize at one in the 78
th minute. ETBU would then continue to apply pressure on the offense while the Comets were unable to put anything on ETBU's net. With 58 seconds left,
Juan Cairo and
Daniel Rutter would team up to find
Silas Sangano at the top of the box who connected from fifteen yards out to give ETBU a 2-1 lead. The Tigers would then hold off the Comets in the final minute as they walked off with the win.
Atkinson and
Silas Sangano each had a goal on two shots for the Tigers while Rutter, Cairo, and Ponticorvo would have an assist in the contest.
Bryant Botello was in goal making three saves. For UTD, Jordan Henderson had two shots while Merek Byckovski scored the only goal on an assist from Brad Rivenes. UTD's goalkeeper Chase Therrien would surrender two goals on five different shots with four on net while making two saves.
Early on in the first half, the Comets would maintain possession of the ball as they would put the first shot on goal, which was saved by Botello. It would be eleven minutes later before Byckovski struck one past Botello for a goal and an early 1-0 lead for UTD. Although the Comets would hold ETBU without a shot throughout the first half, the Tigers would prevent further damage from the Comets holding them to one more shot for the rest of the half.
ETBU will conclude the regular season on Saturday night at Cornish Field as they host Howard Payne University for Senior Night.
