MARSHALL, Texas – Putting up 671 yards of offense in front of the Homecoming crowd at Ornelas Stadium, the East Texas Baptist University football team would use a 41-point first-half en route to a 60-14 win over the Sul Ross State University Lobos. ETBU would also force five Lobo turnovers, including two on special teams. This win sends ETBU to 5-3 overall and a 5-2 in the American Southwest Conferenc.
ETBU put up 671 yards of total offense, which included 364 passing yards and 307 rushing yards. Brian Baca posted a 17-of-29 passing performance with 288 yards and three touchdown passes. Dominic Haggerty rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown run while Justin Ward (seven carries, 71 yards) had two rushing touchdowns. Jeremiah Robertson and Leo Brownfield IV would also find the end zone in the game. Jauque Kuykendall posted 78 yards on three receptions with a touchdown while Richard Johnson and Tarek Beaugard also caught touchdown receptions. Paul Rodriguez was SRSU's top passer with 13-of-20 for 133 yards and a touchdown pass. Williton Greer rushed 13 times for 81 yards including a score while Byron Jones caught nine passes for 77 yards and a touchdown reception.
On defense, Hardy Hill and Josiah Dykes led the defense with seven tackles and a forced fumble each. Dykes along with Anton Clark, Garrett Gibson, Josh Reed, and Drew Brewster would each have a tackle for loss while Zack Biles returned a fumble for a touchdown. Both Malik Mason and Ben Ashton had interceptions in the game. SRSU was led on defense by nine tackles from Isaiah Jacobs while Levah Terry had the only sack of the game.
ETBU won the toss and elected to receive, which proved to be a good decision as Baca would connect with Kuykendall for a 68-yard touchdown reception on the first play from scrimmage. SRSU would take over and try to respond. On fourth down, SRSU failed get the yards needed and the Tigers took over in which they would capitalize for 77 yards on six plays ending with a 28-yard Baca pass to Beaugard. The next two SRSU drives would end with them fumbling both times. The first one was picked up by Biles for a 35-yard fumble return and a touchdown for a 21-0 lead with 6:40 to go in the first quarter. After forcing ETBU to punt late in the quarter, the Lobos had their turn with the ball and they drove to ETBU's 37-yard line by the end of the quarter down 21-0.
SRSU would score four plays into the second quarter to cut into the lead 21-7. But the three-score lead returned after Robertson would rush for 26 yards into the end zone for a 28-7 edge (12:24). Holding SRSU to another turnover on downs, ETBU then drove 10 plays for 62 yards before facing a fourth-and-goal at the HPU one. Electing to go for it, Ward carried the ball over defenders and upped the margin to 35-7(3:45). After SRSU fumbled the kickoff, which ETBU recovered, Baca finished a three-play drive with a 17-yard pass to Johnson as ETBU grabbed a 41-7 cushion (3:02). Mason picked off SRSU's pass on the next drive and ETBU held their 34-point lead at the half.
SRSU started the third quarter with the ball only to turn it over on downs again. Four plays into ETBU's first drive of the second half, Haggerty ran for 25-yards as the Tigers' lead grew to 48-7. After both sides saw their next drives stall, the Lobos would get their second touchdown of the game on a 22-yard pass. But ETBU's next drive would take eight plays ending on a 30-yard touchdown run by Ward, who would rush for 59 yards on four of the plays. By the end of the third quarter, ETBU had a 54-14 lead.
The Lobos would try to get back into the game on their first drive of the fourth quarter. Yet, ETBU's defense denied them another fourth-down conversion as ETBU would take over. After ETBU punted on their next possession, the Lobos would have a pass intercepted by Ashton, who brought the ball back to SRSU territory. On five plays for 86 yards, Brownfield IV would have 35 total yards of offense, including the 10-yard scamper for a 60-14 score (4:32). That would be the final score for ETBU on the day.
ETBU heads on the road next week to Abilene, Texas, to take on McMurry University. Kickoff starts at 1:00 PM.
