MARSHALL, Texas – Holding LeTourneau University to 29.4% shooting from the field, the #13/15 East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team surged to a 75-44 win against the Yellow Jackets to complete the first half of the 2018-19 campaign. With a winning streak at four games, ETBU is 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the American Southwest Conference East Division.
Four ETBU players obtained double-figures in scoring with
Kendrick Clark leading with 17 points.
Amanda Wilson was second on the team with 13 points while
Taylor Singleton's 11 points complemented a team-leading seven rebounds and a share with Clark with four steals apiece.
Kim Childress was the fourth Tiger in double-figures as she too would finish with 11 on the night.
Valarie Matlock was the leader in assists with five.
ETBU made 44.6% from the field while out rebounding LETU, 47-30. Never conceding the lead, ETBU benefited using a 31-16 edge in bench points, 21-9 in fast break points, 35-8 in points off turnovers, and 38-12 in points in the paints. In addition, the Tigers stole the ball 16 times and dished out 18 assists in total.
The Tigers started with seven straight points (10:00-7:53) as Clark (9:45, 7:53) tallied four of them. LETU would get their first basket at 7:23 as they would manage to get within 9-4 (4:32). A pair of Childress free throws (3:30) was answered by a Yellow Jackets three as the score was 11-7 (2:59). But ETBU would thrust themselves further ahead as they would finish with seven of the final ten points with
Erin Meeks (2:36), Childress (2:01), and
Mallory Stephens (1:34) scoring. By the end of the first quarter, ETBU led 18-10.
It would be the second quarter that saw the turning point as ETBU's defense held LETU to just four points the entire quarter while scoring 16. Starting with back-to-back buckets by Wilson (9:31-8:58), Matlock (8:13), and Singleton (7:14) would push ETBU to seven straight points, which led to a 16-2 run and a lead of 34-12 (2:35).
Hanna Hudson (2:55), Meeks (2:35), and Childress (0:54) also scored for ETBU. Meanwhile, LETU would manage just one field goal (5:11) and two free throws (0:08) in the quarter as the Tigers led 34-14 going into halftime.
The Tigers continued their outpouring of points early in the third as a 7-3 run (10:00-7:50) put them up by twenty-four at 41-17. However, LETU would finally put together their first major run scoring nine unanswered points on a 12-1 run (7:34-3:11) to trail 42-29. But Singleton would stop the run with a jumper (2:58) and brought the lead to 44-29. ETBU would still maintain a double-digit lead at 47-33 after three.
ETBU's 9-2 run (10:00-8:17) to start the fourth was keyed from seven points from Clark as it would lead to a twenty-point margin at 55-35. After a pair of free throws by LETU brought it to 55-37, it was Singleton's three (8:10) that managed to secure twenty-plus point lead in which Clark (7:45) and Childress extended it to 63-37. Singleton then added four more points to see the lead up to thirty at 67-37 (6:22) before
Tatyana Lacey drilled a three for the margin to go up 70-37 (4:16). LETU would manage to score seven of the final 12 points to make the final score, 75-44.
ETBU's next home game will be on January 3
rd, 2019, as they host McMurry University at 5:30 PM.
