MARSHALL, Texas – Giving
Katy Boren a senior night to remember, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team rolled their way to an easy 73-54 victory over the Yellow Jackets of LeTourneau University. ETBU is now 19-5 overall and 13-4 in conference play.
Boren was ETBU's top scorer with 16 points along with
Karley McHenry.
Madison McCoy would tally 15 points while
Sydney Saxton led ETBU with eight assists.
Erin Meeks was ETBU's leading rebounder with eight. Ashley Reed (16 points) and Alexandria Thorne (15 points) were the only LETU players to reach double-figures.
ETBU outshot LETU 48.1%-33.3% from the field, 50.0%-28.6% from the three-point line, and 73.7%-22.2% from the free-throw line. The Tigers also outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 39-31. They also won the battle in the paint by outscoring LETU 32-18 while there bench outscored LETU's 16-8.
For ETBU head coach
Rusty Rainbolt, the night could not have gone any better as far as the atmosphere. "It was a special night with it being senior night obviously," said Coach Rainbolt. "What a great crowd for the women's game. That's the best atmosphere I've seen from the girls game. I'm really appreciative of our fans and support to come out. I'm proud of the kids tonight to come back and respond the way they did. We had a tough game out at LC the other day where we just struggled to shoot the ball. We came back tonight and play really well. It was a good effort by our girls."
LETU started the game with a three (9:18) before free throws by Saxton (8:39) and a layup by McCoy (8:31) made it 4-3. After a second LETU three (7:39), McCoy tied up the score at 6-6 (6:16). It was then 10-10 (4:18) before ETBU raced out to six straight points as a three-point play by Meeks (2:49) and a three by Boren (2:17) gave ETBU a 16-10 edge. LETU would score four points before ETBU got the final bucket from McCoy (0:01) to lead 18-14 after one.
The momentum continued in the second quarter as ETBU raced to a 9-0 run (10:00-7:48) to have them leading 27-14. McCoy got four points in the run while
Brittney Jones (8:31) and Boren (8:13) got the other five. ETBU would maintain the double-digit lead throughout the second quarter as Boren (5:56) and
Dree Roberson (6:22) would also get key layups for a 31-17 lead. Boren would finish the first half with 13 points while ETBU would grab a 40-25 lead at the break.
ETBU's momentum would carry into the third quarter when they on a 12-5 (10:00-5:26) run to capture their largest lead of the game at 52-30. McHenry (9:07, 5:40) would have a couple of three's and free throws (5:26) while McCoy added a few free throws (6:18). They would extend that to twenty-five points on a three by
Baylie Lindsey (4:55) and a layup by
Amanda Wilson (4:07) for a 57-32 lead. LETU would finish the third quarter by going on an 8-1 run to trail 58-40.
After a three by LETU (9:52) made it 58-43, ETBU would answer with a 7-3 run (8:19-6:47) with five points from McHenry (9:16, 7:29) and a layup by Meeks (6:47) to lead 65-46 (5:17). McHenry would then pick up her sixteenth point on another three (4:52) to make it 68-49. ETBU would get their final two baskets on a layup from Meeks (4:08) and a final three from Boren (73-54) to make the score 73-54.
ETBU will be back in action this Saturday for their final regular season game against the University of Texas Dallas at 2:00 PM in Richardson, Texas.
